What compressor to buy for painting ?

I have 2 guns and am ready to start my 1st painting project . I need to get your reccommendations on compressors . Like what minimum size I need to spray ? What brand is good , or good for a good price ? I would like to spend less than $ 300.00 if it is possible . Please give me your advice .

i think you will have a hard time finding a good quality compressor for 300.00. you need to look at the cfm rating of your gun you need at least that and should go a little more. i had a craftsman compressor 110 volt that would just barly hold enough volume to do the primering on the car and it would pump out all kinds of water due to the tempature of the compresor running. you need big tank high cfm rating to do a good job. i doubled up 2- 5 hp compressors and it worked well at that you would be in the 600.00 area.

you should look into a 2 stage 208 volt type compressor to have the air needed to insure no problmes.

What type of guns do you have? hvlp or standard suction. cfm required for them would help with your decision.

I'd say if you're going to be serious (a all in one shot paint), this would be minimum...

If you're painting a solid color (white, red, black) and not all at one time.. at the very least, do not buy (if you don't already possess one) an oiless compressor and a min of a 20 gal tank. A descent water seperator (at the end of the air line (not right off the compressor) and a 'last chance' filter on the gun will net pretty descent results. Just my opinion though...

is used the craftsmen 30 gal compressor with no problem at all. This was using a hlvp gun and a cheap walmart primer gun. its right at $300 but it you wait till around christmas they will usually do a sale for 20 off or free set of air tools with it.

whats the cfm requirements from your gun that is waht matters.

if you panel painting. where parts are all off the car you can get away with a smaller compressor. i would say the 6hp 30 gallon may be a little small since it is oil less compressor 2 stage is better. if you go with a smaller compressor you can get another tank to double capacity and make it a higher cfm rating that way.

if it was m e i would get the bigest i can afford. makes things easier and insure that your air supply will not give you problmes when spraying. there is enought things to worry about without sweating the air pressure.

I run the Sears 33 gallon compressor qytum uses- I have NEVER had a problem with volume while spraying with a gravity feed HVLP gun. I have painted two cars with it and used it countless times on air tools.

Drawbacks?
It's noisy, has to run more often, proably won't have the life expectancy of a two stage 220 volt machine. You have to pause when using it on a DA sander to let it pump up.

Advantages?
It's PORTABLE, plugs in anywhere you have a standard 110 outlet (though I do have a 20 amp breaker on that circuit.) It will do the job abd do it well for the "weekend warrior" bodyman, as well as run any 1/2" drive impact wrench you have.

I'd buy another anytime!
