How easy is this?

i don't plan on spending many dollars for someone to sand and paint my car, and i want to do it myself, so i'm curious of about how hard it is to pull the engine and total gut the engine bay. i have some rust starting on the wheel supports i wanna get rid of. any help?

You need plenty of tools, some containers for the drained fluids (coolant, oil, trans, brakes), an engine hoist, and preferably a shop manual to address any disassembly issues, but if you can turn a wrench you can take apart the engine bay.

The hard part is putting it back together.

thanks, i got some people that know some people who do a pretty good job by their standards, so maybe i'll do all the outside body work and let them do the engine work, i dont wanna spend more money then what i got, i'm running out, and i don't have a place to put an engine right at the moment so thanks for the help.

1st. Is the Engine origional. If it is you will probly have more time on your hands.

2nd. When you pull the engine you might consider changing any gaskets that leak or anything while its out and inspect it a little.

3rd. You shouldnt need THAT many tools. A simple set of wrenches and sockets will do. It is wise to have some type of pry bar though. Also if you have a air ratchet wrench it will speed up the process a lil.

4th. Good luck!

is not that small or cheap, if you plan on using them more than once. I had a cheap socket set once... I snapped a few of the sockets clean in half trying to get stubborn bolts off the car, all because of cheap material and design.

Spend the money and get a nice set of Craftsman sockets in metric and imperial. Put something to hold them in. Then get some wrenches... preferably combination open-end and ratcheting closed 12-point. Those things rock. Or just get regular wrenches, they work too.

Here's what I bought from Sears. They have a flexible head on the ratcheting side. While this is not entirely necessary if you're looking to save some money (this set is 60-70 dollars), it certainly helped me get the EGR off no problem.

well the engine is original, 100k miles on it, and i have a nice set of Allen wrenches so i'm set there, i guess my only problem then is pulling the engine, then having a place to put it. is there a cheap lift set i could get? or are they usually a good amount of money? (to lift the engine)

Cheapest puller I have found was $175. You can rent one from some parts stores/hardware stores. I believe that U-haul rents them (dont hold me to that though).

eastwood has a cherry picker on sale for like 135. whihc is a great deal then you need an engine stand those are a cheaper item and can be gotten at you local parts house like autozone. i got mine at pep boys if you have one of those around. i rented a picker from my local rental place for like 25. for a day. if i seen that eastwood asle at that time i would of just bougt it since it was 50, to pull and install by the time i was done.

you can get a stand for about 50 bucks. Not to bad. I picked mine up from autozone this summer for that much.

well that's not as bad as i was expecting. then to dismantle everything is just the process of slowly undoing it huh. well i've got plenty of rachets and what not for that. time to yank that engine

thanks, i plan on renting one, cause once i'm done with it i have no use for it anymore. same with the engine stand, i just hope i don't screw up putting most of the hoses back in the right spot. hey, does anyone have layout of the engine and it's components, or a map type picture i could use?

i just marked all my wires with masking tape and wrote on the tape where it came from use a sharpie its there for good. use a digital camera also they work great for this stuff. i also marked all my acc brackets with tape and labled where each hole went it made install much easier some 6 months later the memory get foggy.
