Painting Engine Compartment
I have been seriously considering changing the paint color on my 91 Camaro from the Artic White to the Rally or Millenium Yellow that most Caviliers have.
If I do this, I will want to engine compartment painted as well.
I will be pulling the motor & tranny out myself to have them rebuilt.
I was just wondering if someone could roughly tell me what a body shop would charge to paint it after I pulled the engine & tranny?
The heater boxes, wiring harnesses, & everything else would have to be removed by them.
I just want the engine compartment painted right now until I can get the motor & tranny back into it, then I will have the rest of the car painted to match.

just rattle can it your self flat black. thats what most guys around my area do with hot rods. it looks awesome no matter what color your car is black is always a good color for the engine compartment. as for paint the whole car its atleast 400-600 for materials. labor depends on who you know.

Paint it yourself, a decent spray gun will run you less than paying a place to do it most likely and it isnt all that hard to remove the rest of the stuff.
Nobody here is going to be able to give you a good estimate because there are too many variables.

I just pulled my engine/trans out today for that very reason. My car is going to the painter next weekend, but he's doing the whole car.
If you just want the engine compartment painted and not the exterior of the car, I agree with Z28Racer, do it yourself. The expense is going to be in the prep work involved- especially if your engine compartment is caked with grease. At the very least, do the prep work yourself.
Even if you've never painted before and you use a cheap gun like a Campbell-Hausfield from Wal-Mart, it's the engine compartment- it'll look fine. GM didn't do such a nice job under the hood either on most original cars I've seen.

I painted my engine bay before I dropped the LS1 in.
I put a rust treatment on the rusted battery tray, used a pressure washer to knock alot of the caked on grease, then used the Castrol Super Clean (purple stuff) to degrease it all. I then re-sealed all of the seams.
I sprayed a 2-part sealer, base, then clear.

Most auto body places wouldn't take the job you're suggesting. They make more profit off insurance jobs so they won't bother the labor intensive job of removing and reinstalling heater boxes and wiring harnesses.
If you remove absolutely everything, you can get a place to do it. I was quoted $200 for a plain black paint, nothing fancy at all. I got it done body color instead at a custom auto body place for about $500. Look for a place that does hot rods/custom jobs. They'll be more willing to take on the job than the average collision shop and they'll probably do a better job too.

do it yourself. you dont have to remove any wires.
wrap them all in tin foil. its the best trick in the world. works great, fast, and its cheap.

This is with a Campbell Hausfeld special. Colors are GM metallic black, and GM metallic silver. Took the better part of a weekend to prep and spray. Why have someone do easy work, and get paid a bunch of money to do it? I'm talking about removing the wire harness and heater box here.

Do it yourself with balck. I did mine with gloss black auto spray from P#p Boys and it came out great. It didnt look cheesy or cheap. Remember, you have that big ol hood covering the sun working to your advantage(minor imperfections will be hidden). Just clean everything up and scuff with light sandpaper and you will be impressed with the results. Practice on something to get the paint to flow evenly.
Thats why you got the car in the first place - so you could do the work yourself right?
