LED 3rd brake light. Any interest?

Need to know if there is any interest in an LED third brake light setup. A friend of mine is making these for the fourth gens and is selling them through the catalogs. He asked if there was any interest in the 3rd gen crowd. The cost will be around $75 or $80 to retrofit the LED assembly into the existing lense from GM.

I'm just looking for interest to see if it's worth his while to manufacture these. If interested, click the poll at the top. Thanks.

anyway you can wire the tails and third brake light up with LEDs like newer cars? just asking because if you could do a third brake light i figured you could do the tails just as easily but you would need more LEDs.

If there is enough demand, anything can be done. The reason the 4th genners have gone after this is because the brake bulbs get so hot, the bulb socket gets brittle and breaks. The bulb socket 1/4 turns into the back of the lens and that also gets brittle and breaks. The only way to fix it when it breaks, is to replace the lens assembly for $80. Then you need to replace the socket and bulbs. I don't know if the 3rd gens had any problem with that. I do know that the 3rd gen has 5 bulbs that are spendy and this would be a visual enhancement. Just a thought at this point. The LEDs are brighter, instant on and use less current for 5 LEDs than 1 bulb.

Any suggestions?

It'd only use 5 leds? Would that create enough light?

If it was cheaper than $80, I'd be interested

I guess there would be more than 5 LEDs. The 4th gens mod uses 5 LEDs. I guess the 3rd gen would have around 10 or 12.

The reason there is not a "No" option is because I am only interested in knowing how many people want this. If you're not interested, then there is no need to reply.

I voted 'maybe', but it just makes me sad to not see a 'no' option

I think one really cool mod would be to actually delete the third brake light and wire a strip of LED's inside at the top of the hatch. It would be kind of like what you see some trucks doing between their tail gate and their bumper.

Tell him not to bother. First off... the handful of LEDs you'd need can be purchased for less than $10.00.. but there is a better solution: goto http://www.superbrightleds.com and buy 12v compatible replacement bulbs for almost every light in a 3rd gen. Some crappy pics, but check out my blue LED dash mods (all purchased from superbrightleds) at http://www.fl-thirdgen.org/brazen.html

No and sort of. ;] The "EL" gauge faces have a rotary switch that dims them to a more pale blue. The LED replacement bulbs everywhere else in the dash cannot be dimmed.... that is inherent to all LEDs, since they are not filament-based bulbs and need a certain amout of voltage to drive the arc. (whew!)
I'm a lil older now, so the brighter dashlights doesn't bother me much. ;]

Yeah, it was kind of a rhetorical question.

That's the only reason I don't like LEDs in the dash...

Yours looks good.
