Damn. Are our cars really that bad? That article makes it sound like thirdgens were the worst cars ever built.

My car runs great, and I love it.

I believe they are the seatbelts that slide to the A-pillar when the door opens. Correct me if im wrong.

As for the people of that site, talking trash, "Aw, Go blow it out your @%$."

Snoopy takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I don't see that many imports running 160k-200k+ miles and still run good.

the door mounted "automatic seatbelt" setup gm had was generally partial to their early 90s FWD cars. my luminas have them, all they really were was a last ditch effort to not put airbags in their cars. so tehy had to have some sort of passive restraint system,

my car never had any of those problems but let's see here, let me see if i have to worry about any of THEIR problems...

engine: yep, replaced it with a vette engine
tranny: slapped a TH350 in there
paint: yep, down to metal and repainted
fuel system: uh huh, replaced that too
seatbelts: yep, harness replacement
cruise control: who needs this anyways, gone!

so as far as i can see... even if our cars had these problems, they are still the baddest machines built with 200k miles on a stock motor still running around the US

if anyone has access to a dealer service program- GM uses SI- you can look at all the campains and TSBs on every GM car- they all have them- and ALL automakers have them. personally i would rather have a recall than a TSB about my problem because a recall GM will pay for the fix- the technical service bullitan- you pay for the fix

Bull****

CAS is in league with the ****in' EPA. I read that article and just the whole sudden acceleration on 5.0/5.7 from 87-92 i think is crap, as far as i know, my throttle cable had a little play in it, but that got fixed. the whole crash safety thing, well, almost any car can get smashed it depends on the situation, not whether the car is labled a "muscle car". And my car had a 13/14 year old paint job, still looked showroom new, the only thing wrong with it was it had the swirlies that you get after years of polishing, but you only noticed if you were three inches away, so i can say that paint peeling is probably bull**** too. But hey, that was my experience and that's my opinion. Just had to vent.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. lol

The "Sudden Acceleration" thing... hahah, is that sorta like saying that it's got too much torque?

And actually the paint peeling thing is factual. The cars that got painted in Van Nuys (IIRC) have crappy water-based paint. My clearcoat is pelling all over. I looked it all over yesterday (it's been sitting for 9 months) and there's even MORE fading... A maaco paint job is in order when I get it running again I fear.

Everything else besides the sudden acceleration thing, and they are the worse cars made, I agree with that site on. The seat belts on my car need fixed badly (the driver's works, the passenger lock mechanism needs fixed, only half locks, one of the rear bucket seat seatbelts needs to have the return mechanism fixed).

But that's easy enough to get away from. 6 point harness is much safer than airbags any day anyways.

The paint, yeah I wish GM had that fixed, but there's plenty of 20 year old cars w/ paint that sucks, I dont know how they can say that would make the car the worse out there.

As for safety... perhaps they havent seen the collision tests for the F-body, but those things keep the passenger compartment intact GREAT at all angles except on a side-straight on (T-bone) collision. But SFC will save your butt there.

I wouldnt trust that website's opinions for crap. Take the facts and read them as that, leave the monkey spank elsewhere .

I'm on my fifth F-body

81 berlinetta, 85 Z28, 92 RS, 02 TA, 87 IROC

Most have had their issues, but any used car with any appreciable amount of miles will.

this is the most retarded i've ever seen

When equipped with airbags, these cars have relatively good crashworthiness but very high fatality rates because they are muscle cars which are marketed to younger drivers with higher crash rates
i think that is considered stereotyping and makes them sound really stupid.

. NHTSA investigated all 1985-88s with 5.0/5.7L engines for sudden acceleration but failed to order a recall.
they actually think they should have a recall for sudden acceleration?? thats about the gayest thing i've ever heard, they just said "...because they are muscle cars..." do they even know what that means?? its supposed to be fast and have "sudden acceleration"

and they say "..so and so ranked the Camaro/Firebird as the worst car in America.." and all the really have to back it up is the seatbelt recall and the 20 - year old paint peeling??

besides, my camaro has about 200,000 miles on it, and it still runs great, of course they would probably say its dangerous because its too fast. they just don't know how to drive

I must say that is totally insane, When the 82-92 Camaros and Firebirds were designed, they made the dashes and interior panels as "up to date" as they could be. Look at a Ferrari of the same vintage, they had the squared off interior too. Our interiors fit our cars for the year they are., if they were designed 10 years later then they would have the rounded dashes, and exteriors like the 4th gens... Wait a min., 4th gens were designed 10 years later.

Yep, I hate it so much I have the entire interior stripped out so I can repair the rust and upgrade the sound system. I hate it so much I have an engine to rebuild and put in it, sitting on an engine stand in the garage.

I hate it at times, but that's only when I'm working on it and can't figure something out or can't get a bolt loose. Any car will do that to me.

they squareness of the dash doesn't bother me personally, i think it fits well with the squareness of the rest of the car. however, what i don't like is that the dash pads crack so bad

it is a pain in the butt when you dash cracks but they are real easy to replace. a lot better than a 2nd gen. the hardest part to keep up with is the tires just love to burn them off lol

i was gonna say the same thing- the design of the dash was modern for the 80s and 90s- look at if the 4th gen dashs crack in 10 years- ill be happy swapping my couple screws out and have mine done in 10 minutes.

I was not going to comment on this topic, but what the hell. I have owned 3 of them 83Z28 305 4bbl T-5, 84 Z28 355 700R and now my 1989 IROC 305 700R. Lets face it they are cheap sports cars that being said any one of them stock for stock would have out cornered any civic, crx, prelude, neon, mustang, etc.

The parts are cheap, they are easy to work on, they are sexy as hell, while the 4th gens have stolen some of the 3rd gen glory for some. There is nothing sweeter than seeing a bitchin' 3rd gen.

Chicks dig em' thats all the matters!!

Did anyone notice a few of the complaints in that article? Like the tail/stop lights burning out and the accesory drive belt wearing out? Duh! That's regular maintenecne.

Why don't they just complain about having to change the oil or put new tires on? And their theory on it's crash performance? I'm sorry if some young kid can't handle a little bit of torque. That isn't the cars fault

WTF?!

I just have to say that I love my car. Most of the crap on there I find it impossible to replate to my ca as well. My car was painted in Narwood and the paint looks great, even after 18 years.

Seems like they label these cars as not being practical automobiles. Just becuase they are "muscle cars" that polute the air, suck up gas, and are driven irresponsibly. I personally wouldn't have it any other way.

Oh and by the way, the things that seem to be most common in thirdgens aren't even listed. For example,

Headlight motors
Hatch motors
Leaky T-tops
Falling headliners
Seperating center consoles

Autosafety.org can kiss my hairy A>S>S!

Had that "sudden acceleration" thing happen to me.. Nothing quite like powerbraking it when i don't want to. I thought you had to press both pedals!!?

My car has definitely been a love/hate relationship

Love the looks, love the sound...

Hate the squeaks, hate the 700-R4, hate the 305.

Of course that's nothing some oil, a T56 and an LS1 wouldn't fix.

Shallow pockets suck.....
