I know this doesn't help a whole lot, but the part in the first picture is called the "door wedge plate" I 'm pretty sure its there to ensure a snug fit between the door and body. There should be silencers (most probably made of a hard rubber) behind the wedge plate to create the right spacing

Benefit you? maybe, it'll probably just give you a better fit so the door wouldn't rattle...i'd think.

These wedgies are found only on coupes with t-tops and convertibles. I shudder to think they were GM's method of stiffening the chassis!...

Re: what is this???

Those are GM's answer to the racket coming from the rear of the doors when you hit a bump. Service bulletin was put out about them.

Third Gen F-bodies were before my time, but we put wedges on a lot of doors to control chucking. It is for noise mostly. Makes sense to me on T-tops and convertibles since our doors are a stressed member of the frame.
