custom GTA door panel idea
Been pondering the idea for a while. On my '88 I've got the deluxe interior, all black. The car is white. I was thinking about having our local trim shop re-do the door panels with the center section done with white cloth or leather. I've got the carpeted kick panels too and wanted to continue the white into them with the same fabric. Anyone done something like this and have pics? (besides redraif?)

I have a set of the GTA (deluxe) door panels with the map pockets in them. They came out of a car with pwr windows. My car has manual windows and the cranks will hit the map pockets. If I take the map pockets off, it leaves like 5 large holes. So I took the panels to a local trim shop that does a lot of custom work:
I was told that since the cloth section of the GTA doorpanel is "molded" to the vinyl section, there's no way they could reupholster it unless they just glued the new upholstery over the existing, which would leave a funky edge.
I am now looking for a set from a manual-window car, or at least a set without the door pockets.

Mine have power windows but the same pocket design.
You can see there.
I redid mine, took off the metal trim and peeled off the carpet, roughed up the rest, used some batting from a fabric store and spray glued it on, then spray glued the fabric over it.

Here is what it looks like In the car.

No wierd ridges, just a smooth even door panel

I recovered them in white vinyl. It was very easy to do- all I needed was a flathead screw driver, a pair of sissors, and five bucks for the material.

That's it. And I want to continue it into the kick panels too. It would be white since my car is white. Is that dyed or did you re-cover that section of the panel? I wouldn't be able to die mine white from black.

entire panels were originally red. The outside original vinyl was dyed black. The original cloth section was done by a local upholstery shop and is an alluminum plate with vinyl wrapped around it. They even remade the pouch in vinyl.
It's been nice ever since.
