you tell them that you haven't made up your mind about which shop you are going to take it to, then they will write a check to you for the damages...i did this about a month ago and pocketed a large sum of money, which i was able to buy my new rims with

your hood blisters dont look like they got busted up, so just get a used iroc hood and your good to go hood wise. I agree the 91-92z hood is the way to go.

From the pic it just looks like a hood, bumber cover and headlight bar. Why such a high estimate?

Bent radiator support means the it needs to go on a frame straightening machine (puller?). That's big money, plus they are quoting you to use all new parts.

Let them total it so you can get more money. But, tell them you want to buy it from them. I did this with my daughters car, they gave her 2300.00 and I brought it from them for 200.00. Had the car fixed for 700.00, brought her new rims and tires. Or you can simply tell them you want to keep the car. Also, isnt your neck just a little sore?!!!!!!!

try not to get it totaled bro. then your car will have a salvaged title and then its not worth keeping it anymore. I say get the SS hood. I love it big time. Good luck

My insurance company has always cut a check to me and then when my car is finished, I would pay the body shop.

Don't let them total the car. You will ose money that way because it is very hard to sell a car with a slavage title and in my state, the car has to be inspected by the DOT to be tagged. A real pain in the A$$!!

I went to register the '91 Firebird that I bought and it has a salvaged title also. Now I have to send to Austin, TX for a clear title but include receipts of all the rebuilding that I have done to prove that I am not stripping and selling cars I guess. Passed state inspection though, now I have to have one more inspection for a secondary permit before I can get new tags.

Most states are pretty understanding with salvage titles on older cars. You can't really decide whether to total the car or not, that's up to insurance. Your car isn't totaled, but your title will be because the insurance bought the car.

To be truely totaled, X number of major parts and X number of minor parts must have to be replaced. It varies by state, but for the most part once you buy it back and have it fixed, you fill out the form and take it in for inspection. Here in Mississippi if you pass the inspection (easy if the form's right), $75 later the salvage is lifted from the title.

It makes sense if you think about it, a brand new car with $10,000 worth of damage wouldn't even be close to totaled, yet an older car with $2000 would be. The whole 'salvage' branding comes when insurance purchases a car.

Boy, I'm glad I live in Virginia. I have had 2 cars "totaled", (a couple more if you count the ones I couldnt drive afterwards). When my first one was totaled the insurance never even bothered getting the title. The second my daughters car, I just went and got new plates and reregistered and that was it. Kept riding on the same inspection sticker and let the body shop have it for 3 days. Last week, 3 years later, I waxed it up and it looks and drives great. The title says nothing about being totaled. Sounds like your local government is trying to sqeeze their hands in your pocket. I guess the best thing to do is check local laws and dmv to get the facts for your state.

Yeah, getting a rebuilt title here is free. I guess in Virginia they might automatically apply the 'totalled' rules and don't transfer titles if it's not mechanically totaled.
