Little Black Box?

I began installing my 4th gen console today, and have it loosely in place for a test-fit. There are a couple of areas that will need to be trimmed, apparently as it is not sitting flush in the rear. I thought an '02 6 speed piece would be a direct bolt in with no trimming, but I guess not. Anyway, one area of interference is coming from a little black box, and I'd like to know what it is. It is located about 4 -6 inches to the rear of the shifter, and has a wiring harness attached to it. It is about the size of 8 or so saltines stacked one on top of the other. Anyone know what it is? I can either relocate the box a little to the left, or trim some of the inner structure of the console that is hitting it, but before I think about moving it, I would like to know what it is for!

Thanks for any help.

Could it be for the back-up lights and whatnot?

I think that it is the air bag arming sensor, my 1991 RS Camaro Convertible has the same thing in the same location.

its the airbag arming sensor. you can relocate it as long as it is sitting level and facing forward just like it is now. otherwise it won't work like its suppossed to

Hmmm, airbag sensor, huh? I'm not sure I want to touch that, so I guess I will just trim the inner reinforcement on the console a bit where it is hitting. Anyone do a 4th gen console swap on an air-bag equipped F-body and run into the fitment issue?

Thanks for id'ing it for me, guys.

xpballer, do a quick search....there's probably 100 people who've done the swap by now.

I put one in my 91 and didn't have a problem. I eventually went back to the third gen console though, just didn't like the look.
