Let's Help Me Out.

Mods, sorry if no double posting? allowed. I stuck this in exhaust, but I thought maybe I'd get more responses here too.... If a prob, do ya' job!

Hey guys... Thanks in advance to anyone who can help a girl out!

I have a 1984 Firebird S/E V8, 305 carb.

Lately I've noticed a funky @$$ hesitation when the car is going changes gears.

So basically, it feels like I'm driving a stick shift even though I'm not.

Secondly, sometimes it... lurches? I guess would be the best word to describe it. I'll be at a complete stop, idle is around 600 rpm based on my tach. and give it gas, the car feels like it's gonna die!!!! I KNOW I have gas in it, 91 octane, b/c I keep it on a full tank. Don't ask why, I just do.

So, checked my fuel line, it's fine. Checked my fuel filter, whatdya know... It's fine too.

Took it to my cousin who owns a mechanic shop, he says go get your catalytic converter replaced. So I do.

Which helped...
a. It sounds ALOT better.... Like ALOT.
b. It runs better than it did before, but not like it should.

So, now I'm a bit stumped as to what to do...
Anyone got some hints?

I'm trying to knock down every option before I take it in again, even though he's family, busta's gotta turn a dolla'. LoL. JK. I'm a poor starving college student in addition to the fact it's Christmas time... Enough said.

P.S. My stock catalytic conver. was internally combusted.... hehe.

Oh yeah. I sing. exhaust w/ dual tips... The stock muff. was replaced with a 80 series Flowmasters, I think... (Blonde moment...)

I had a similar problem a couple months back. After about 2 weeks its stop trying to die at stop lights and stop changing gears funny. The only thing I did was change my O2 sensor and I started running the car through the gears when I left a stop light.

The O2 sensor is like a 10$-15$ part so might not hurt to try that.

If you don't need to run 91 octane then don't, all you doing there is wasting money, seriously it will. Running higher octane can sometime cause problems.

But try running a basic tune up, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I check that cap and rotor make sure it is ok. My camaro would hesitate or suddenly act like it was going to stall then it all of a sudden it move, shortley later the plug wires got burnt because the cap of the distrubuter came lose and turned. So check that. Also couldn't hurt to check a coolant sensor if you have one, not sure if carbs have them so.

running a higher octane on the larger engines doesnt do damage it accualy helps a little on milage .... now if you have a four or six cylender it can give do some damage because it ignites at higher tempuratures, you wont knowtice to much of a differnce using it but if you had a turbo or supercharger theres a big difference it all has to do with compression

ok back to the subject.... might want to take a look at the carb see if that could be teh problem othere wise i would def inatly try the o2 sensor its cheap and could be it
