12" steering wheel too extreme?

I don't know what it is with me and steering wheels.

I didn't like the original airbag one, so I bought an older TA model without. And then I bought another wheel. And then another.

Now I really like the Grant 12" Formula GT wheel. But I'm wondering about 12". Has anyone ever used a 12" wheel? What are the pros/cons of bigger vs. smaller steering wheels?

Thanks.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, I have always found the super-dinky wheels to be really unappealing. But, I guess that is all a matter of individual taste.

I had a smaller grant GT wheel on my car for a while...

1- Like most grant wheels it looked cheap
2- I got tired of having to reposition myself to see my gauges.

Cheap? I thought they were good wheels.

And do you mean that the wheel, being smaller than others, somehow blocks the guages from visibility? I always keep my wheel as far down on the column as I can, I would think that a smaller wheel would give me more visibility.

I have a 13" grant wheel and love it. I have more leg room and the steering is quicker. You have less leverage with a smaller steering wheel but you probably won't notice unless you don't have power steering.

Might want to check for VA but in PA, anything smaller than 13" is not street legal.

I did a quick search of the VA code.....I didn't see anything. But it's not like illegality has stopped me ever before.

What's the logic behind that law?

The build quality of the grant wheels is good, but some of us don't consider a plastic grip to be an upgrade when the factory wheel at least had leather, however low quality that leather may have been.

The better Grant stuff is available with a leather grip, and while the way they attach the leather to the spokes is horrible, it's still a nice wheel overall.

Quality wise I think they are ok...

Its like the difference between a casio and a nice watch. The casio works fine but you'll have a hard time finding anyone who compliments you on it. I actually had a grant wheel on my car for a while... one of the nicer leather wrapped 14"ones... I put a stock wheel back on it. Much better.

I look through my wheel to see my gauges. You dont? Are you like 7' tall or something? I think the stock wheel is over 14" in diameter... take a look at your gauges and see what would happen if the top of your wheel would drop down an inch or two. for me it blocks vision of the tops of the gauges. I'd have to tilt it up bus driver style to see the gauges... tiliting it down would make it worse.

you will have to muscle a lil more to turn the wheel, and it almost feels as if you have to reposition your hands more to the wheel when turning a lot in parking lots.
i had one and got tired of it. ive got a stocker in now.
much more comfortable and you can see the gauges without rubber necking.

Will take a few days to get used to, but once ya driven around with the smaller one, no way you'll go back.

Plus like mentioned earlier ... THE GAUGES .. I couldn't see all my gauges with that big factory steering wheel

I got my Grant from the junkyard .. red.. painted it black.. needs some work... but it's ok for now

wow no in between feedback

well i have a grant 12"?? idk but the ****er is SMALL

compared to my dad's silverado steering wheel

the truck definately is more comfortable for day to day driving and i'd rather have the big huge honkin wheel for things like doughnuts....

but the grant in my bird... idk it adds to the feel that you can take a turn at 90 mph... it definately feels more responsive and im much more confident in it....plus there's ALOT of leg room added and mine makes my interior look cleaner.... but its REALLY hard to do hand over hand for your drivers test (im turnin 16 soon) so yea lol

just buy one.... then install it... if you dont like it just take it back (if your buying it from like auto zone or something)

I have a Grant GT 13" wheel in my IROC-Z. I use this car for drifting which involves alot of countersteering. The smaller diameter wheels make a night and day difference, much less effort to get the same results. If you gotta muscle the steering then maybe something is wrong with your power steering, I could not personally tell a difference between stock and 13" as far as it being harder to turn. I've seen 12" steeringwheels, I personally think they are too small. I think the choice between 12" or 13" would be a personal preferance.

Here's a pic of the GT wheel in my IROC-Z. This was before I gutted it. I don't like the old man tan its gonna change very soon.

Not to highjack the thread, but CrazyHawaiian that is a nice looking steering wheel. Looks like the cushion is nice and thick. What is the actual name of the steering wheel and where can I buy one like it? How do you like that B&M shifter? I read plenty of mixed reviews about it. I am thinking about getting one, I like the way it makes the IROC look.

Thanks, I like the steering wheel alot. Its called the Grant Formula GT wheel, P/N 763 on Grants Website. They sell them all over the place (Autozone, Summit, jegs, etc) and there are alot of different color combos. I got mine on E-bay clearance sale, brand new for $60 w/ the hub adapter included. I dunno if I would consider it the best steering wheel out there or anything, I'm just happy with it because it looks decent, it was cheap, and it works good.

What about the B&M shifter. How do you like it?

PA is 12", I think its more of a Federal requirement so all 50 are 12"
