Body Work Help!!!

Ahhhh... I am getting into the bodywork now...

I am working on sanding down the door... OMG there is sooo much bondo... Its not from rust either... looks like some one got it all dented up really bad and pulled some of em out and then bondo'd over it... Should I sand all of the bondo off???

Or should I leave the bondo on there that is still good...(just sand it all completely down?)

Maybe I should just give it up and buy a new door?

I am really confused and a little angry cuz It looked like there was just a little bondo on the door...(its across alot of door almost)
But I guess more underneath? Some the steel looks clean after bondo was sanded off... no clue why it had bondo? near body line.

I hope some 1 out there has some tips for me(ill try and get some pics some time)

Hey Brandon,
Where in Michigan are you??...
The size of the area is not an issue here, if it is all good steel underneath. But rather the depth...If it is over and eighth of an inch, I'd consider grinding it all out and re-bumping the panel.
One caveat, look for holes under the bondo, as it is a sign of old school bump work. It compromises the panel and is a poor repair.

i would take all the bondo off to see exactly what your working with if it is that bad a new door skin isn't too too bad to put on. if the dents are shallow you could go inside the doors and use a flat sheet metal hammer and a dolly that you could find at probally any parts store

This is Nathan... Actually the car is mine

Looks like they had some damage on that left side from before... There are some holes where they pulled alot of the dents out... Looks like it must have started craking so the next owner just kept building it up(never did it right first time)

I live in Springport MI(near Jackson) You?

Smack dab in the middle of the thumb...(middle of nowhere)
Unless you're into welding and serious repair BEFORE you even start to get the metal straight...You may want to re-think everything and at the least skin the door.

How much would a new door skin be?
Just looks like they had to build up alot of bondo to get the door body kit piece on or w/e.

I haven't found a full door skin, but I think the bottom half is under 35 bucks

And you just weld it on? It is all ok... but from the body line down(aprox middle of door down)

How can I get the body kit pieces to fit? since they had to build it up with bondo to work?

Yeah you'd just weld on the new door skin and then crimp the edges over I'd assume. I'll be trying the same thing in a few months. Before you buy the door skin tho, contact the company, such as The Paddock or Classic Industries, Specialists in GM muscle car restoration and performance parts., and ask them if the lower doorskin will cover what you need to replace. Once you have the new sheetmetal on, you should be able to line up your gfx and drill new holes, it should line up fine assuming that u welded the new part on correctly. Do you have any pictures of what your door looks like?

with a skin you remove the old one by grinding off the spot welds on the inside of the door then you put the new one on by folding the edges over and you can spot weld it or use panel bonding adheasive
