looking to buy a GTA

ok, so im looking at an 88 GTA for sale for $3200. its got an automatic and a 305. t-tops, power windows, power locks, power hatch and had a new paint job 2 years ago.
heres the link to the autotrader page.
AutoTrader.com - Cars For Sale: Car Details

now heres my question, is it worth it? i mean, i know you cant make much of an educated guess considering there is no info on miles and other goodies. BUT, alot of you guys are pretty well informed on TA's and i was just wondering what to look for and what i should look at spending on it. does this look like a good deal? now i havent talked to the guy yet, but i figure it doe run, but thats just an assumption. i called the guy and left a message, hopefully he gets back to me real soon.

MODS: if i put this in the wrong forum you can move it to where it should be, i didnt know where to put it exactly.

Find out the milage and whats been done to the car?Don't take anyones word on whats been done without seeing the paper work. They tend to be good cars just don't let your heart takeover use commonsence.Take for a ride with the sounds off and see what you hear. I'm sure he/she may even take $2800 for it. good luck

I would hold out for a 350 tpi car, you can find one for about the same price.

thanks for the replys guys! i just tlked to the lady that owns it. shes the second owner, it has a new catback exhaust and new tires. it has 112K on the clock. according to her it runs great and is in perfect condition, ill find out tomarrow. oh and i confirmed it, it IS a 5L TPI car. i know it isnt a 5.7, but still, i plan on putting in an ls1 eventually anyway. the only reason she is letting it go is because she got a new car and so did her hubby, and now they dont have room for it. anything in perticular i should look out for?

Y84 is the rpo code for the gtas...I looked for a year or 2 for a gta close that was worth the money and ended up paying 2,000 for one that is a L98 car in pretty good shape just needs some tlc....mine had not been the best cared for but it has 282k miles on the stock long block and still runs strong and burns little to no oil so it does need a little work. I have had mine almost a year and it hasnt failed me once yet and runs good. Alot of cars dont have the rpo codes in the console still so you might have a hard time telling if it is one or not but if you head over to
THE GTA SOURCE PAGE - THE HOME For The Trans Am GTA Enthusiast....
it will tell you how to tell if it is true gta or not.

Just look for the little details on them, make sure its as clean as it looks in the pics, white paint will hide alot so just remember that and look it over good...take your time when looking at it. I came across mine out of pure luck, was driving down the alley behind a used car dealership and saw it and of course when inside and inquired. I found out it has just been traded in and she only gave 1000 on trade in so I offered her 2000 and she took it....not a bad deal at all. I came back the next day to get it and she had it sitting out on the lot after they cleaned er up for me and she said she had 3 offers on it sitting there for 4 hours. It took me long enough to find one local that I didnt care what shape its in but this one isnt bad at all, in very good shape to compared to past projects

thats awesome.
its kind of crazy that i found this one. i NEVER look on autotrader because of the lack of info and such. even if i do i dont have money so it didnt matter, but then my mom told me shed give me $3000 to spend on a car, and i found it one day later, and ive been looking for thirdgens for 4 years now. the one ive got is in ok condition, its got its problems, but this one looks promissing.

ok so i just got back from looking at it. and all i have to say is WOW!
its got extremely nice paint, new TOYO Proxes4 tires, new exhaust, and 4 wheels disc brakes. its in immaculate condition. it has WS6 wheels, so i guess its a GTA WS6? is that a possible combination? anyway, its in great condition, and im about to jump out of my skin. im picking it up tomarrow for $3100. i will post pics after it comes home and gets washed and waxed.

All GTA's have the WS6 option. Congrats on your purchase.

You have two choices.

1. Find your build sheet.

2. Order a PHS packet. Pontiac Historic Services Home

It could be in a number of places or it can be non-existant. I have found both of my '83's build sheets under the carpet and have also found the build sheets to both of my old '82 Trans Am's between the drivers seat frame and foam. I'd try those spots first.

Some cars have them on top of the gas tank too.
But, if the electric fuel pump was replaced at some time, it could be long gone!
A lot of options were standard on GTAs, so getting a PHS invoice may show hardly anything.
Still though, the PHS invoice is good to have with your car.

Hope this helps,

George
