PLEASE HELP. trying to remove dome light...

ok 1988 camaro sport coupe, trying to remove the headliner, and save it, so i can reupholster it, i have the dome light there that has to come down, its not a console, just a dome light, how do i remove it, i can see the two bolts or whatever holding them on, it looks like something they kinda push/crimp on or whatever, how do i get it off?

the 2 metal rivets. I can get them out and put them back in but i cant do it without bending and twisting the damn things. Sometimes they come out with a breeze other times they dont. Take a pair of needle nose plyers and a small flathead and do the best you can. Youll get it.

Ive never known a correct way to do this.

The dome light cover should come off to reveal one or two screws (this is based on my 91) then the plastic piece that holds the light itself is riveted to the frame in the roof.

peace

before you try getting the metal rivets out, make sure to disconnect your battery if the light bulb isn't in the dome housing still.

I made that mistake and pliers touched the prongs that hold the bulb in place. Not a fun feeling.

yeah thanks guys, i got impatient and got em out with a flathead screwdriver, they were a pain in the *** but i mananged to salvage them, but the headliner, it just fell apart when i tried to remove it, it smelled musty and when i touched it in some spots it literally turned to like dust. so whatever, im going to drop the 250 on a abs headliner, sunvisor, and sail panel kit, thanks guys.

how does the car look without a headliner? Mine is sagging and off color... I almost think it would look better without it.

my 85 trans am looked good without it, nice and smooth glossy metal, but my camaro i removed today, it looks OK but its obvious something is missing, i can see wires, the metal has a bunch of ridges and different contours, random holes etc in it from the factory, it looks kinda crappy....

Re: PLEASE HELP. trying to remove dome light...

Yeah, thanks guys for all of the info. I'm about ready to pull mine out and reupholster with some suede material. Original fabric is starting to sag and come unglued. This really helps with the how-to's.
