Firebird headlight issue (I searched)
My headlights are acting up on my '87. They go up about every tenth time I hit the switch, but if I crank them up manually, they'll go down every time I turn off the lights perfectly. If one works, they both work...one never goes up without the other. They aren't in any kind of bind. I assume the problem must be the switch itself, or the relay. Can someone point me to the correct placement of the relay? My arms aren't long enough to flip the switch with my head under the hood to listen for it to click, so I need some help here.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Also along the same lines...a PO left me with some inventive ways of attaching the front parking lights to the front end. Can somebody take a picture of how they are supposed to mount, as well as how the light housing aligns with the nose itself? Mine are on some ghetto looking spacers to set the light housing above the front end...do they go above, under, or are they supposed to line up behind it?
Thanks, again!

On the headlights, I would assume your bushings on the inside of the motors are shot. That is what the issue was with mine doing the same thing. I bought a rebuild kit for the motors, took about 10 minutes to swap out the parts, and now the headlights work great!
Sorry, I do not currently have any pix of how the parking lights mount, and my car is locked up in a garage far away still in storage.

Sounds easy enough!
Wouldn't one light work without the other if it were the bushings, though? I'm sure they need replaced, so I'll get them on my list either way.
Thanks!

I had the same problem on my 87. I replaced the headlight control module and it was fine after that. It is located in the engine bay against the firewall on the driver side. It is a little box with a set of wires in and a set out and sits just under the wipers. I ordered a rebuilt one from topdownsolutions.com for $40.
I just put two new motors in a year or so ago before I realized that wasn't the problem. At least now I have new motors and a new module so my headlights will work for a while now (hopefully).

Same here on my 87 GTA. Smetimes the driver's side work, other times not. I can play with that firewall relay, and one headlight, will work, or both go out. Getting a new one Sunday, from a fellow local club member. He's gonna rebuild my stocker, as a spare.

Sweet. Thanks for the replies, guys.
I'll dig into mine this weekend and see how much of my two years of electronics I can remember from school.

So far so good!
I pulled my module off the firewall and took it apart. Ntohing in there to clean other than the contacts on a relay...so I popped the cover off it and cleaned them up, put it back together and sealed it, cleaned all the contacts where the wires plug into it and coated them with dielectric grease...and there you have it. Took me 5 minutes, and the lights work every time...at lease so far.
Thanks for the help!

Lucky dog!
I'm not very physically capable of doing much of my own work anymore, so I gottas wait to get help!
However, for thoses that want the OEM fog lights to stay on, when the high beams come on...5 minutes, wire cutter, ring terminal, crimper. That's it, and you're done!
