mechanical gauges: hard or easy?

for couple reason,
Im gonna run a double or triple pod set up depending on the feedback here.

Im planning on putting tach meter,
since Im running a v8 cluster on my v6, tach is off so I want a mechanical one.

how hard is it to install one?
I mean.. what exactly am i gonna do?
put some sensor near the crank pulley or something??

and how bout a water temp gauge?
will i be connecting something to the hose or something like that??

the online catalog ofcourse wont give me instructions..
so i want to make sure its something doable by myself before buying.

thanks in advance for any help

well a "mechanical" tachometer is like < ~1970 and it had a drive cable like alot of speedometers

thats not what your looking for, all of those tachs your looking at will work fine

aw ok... so what are all the gauges in the link i just put?
electrical gauge instead of mechanical?

well in that case too how hard is it to install?
all i read is that u need to adjust the clipping or something
depending on how many cylinder u got,
but where do u hook it up so the gauge reads the actual RPM?
the distributor or somewhere in the spark plug?

do not waste your time with mechanical gauges... electrical ones are just a little more... if you want bargin electrical gauges invest in auto gage ones... they are made by AUTOMETER and are relatively inexpensive. Electrical ones are easier to install by far. You still have to run wires for the lights on the mechanical so why not plug in a couple extra instead of ugly copper line?

yeah.. im generous when it comes to my car(more than anything)

i just figured they were all electrical unit..
ill just get a tach and water temp combo for now,
and hope that installation is easy.

i got a 91 v6 and i dont recall any extra hole but ill look into that,
thanks!

Why not fix/use your stock gauges rather than hacking your interior with redundant gauges?

because as stated
my cluster went nuts so i had to find a used one for my 91 v6.

as 90-92 cluster is a little harder to find than 82-89,
i could only find a v8 one.

so my tach is slightly inaccurate,
due to the difference in number of cylinder, its NOT broken.

i wanted a a-pillar pod anyways
so yeah im probably gonna go with oil temperature and tach combo on my a-pillar.

Doesn't answer my question why you don't fix it. It's one resistor that calibrates the tach. If you're going to get a-pillar pods for the look (victim of Fast and the Furious?) then atleast get gauges you don't already have. And oil temp has to be the most worthless gauge in your car unless you're hardcore racing in the V6 class.

i dont know how to fix the resistor, or change them or something?
since i totally broke a nice cluster in the past(had to drive mycar without fuel gauge and temp working for almost a month)
and had to pay for a new one i dont reall wanna take one apart again.

ill just do the pod for now until i feel like fixing the factory tach,
by then ill just change to another pod too.

call me rice if u want, i never even watched any of FF series
but k i do like the look of a-pillar and thats my taste,
thanks for ur info but ill do what i want.

You can get a tach small enough to fit in an a pillar pod?
Sorry man but I think your waisting your cash getting a pod with guages you already have.
It can not be that hard to find a v-6 cluster or like firebird josh said change the resistor ( paying someone to do it will cost less and be way eaisier than running a new pod and new guages )
