I'm thinking of buying the Ram air hood with the ram air box and was curious for thoses who know about it or have it if you will notice a performance increase with this hood??I've decided I no longer like my current hood.

ya u will gain a couple HP. because of better air flow.
I was told you would gain in the neighbor hood (no pun intended)of 25 hp with this hood.I find that hard to believe.Only a couple hp is not noticible though!

But if you at the same time get the new TripleX Quanticum Express Delight Intergalactical uranium coated quadruple prong sparkplugs and the absolutely biggest exhaust tip you can find (NOTE has to be bigger than 5 inches in diameter), you not only can but you WILL pick up 30 hp from the box, another 15 from the air filter and yet another 12 from the spark plugs.

and if you add chrome valve covers at the same time you will get at least 100 HP. the car then should run low 10's all day long.Member
You will get a slightly cooler charge of air, which is more dense. So you pick up a little, but Ram Air is more a marketing gimmick than it is a reality.
Real ram air involves a supercharger or turbocharger. Now that's the kind you CAN feel.

The cooler air going to the engine will help, but by no means lead to big horsepower, maybe 5 hp at the rear wheels.

You might also notice a slight increase in your fuel economy as well.

Mine helped get rid of a sluggishness my car had when it was warm. I figure it couldn't hurt that it is a straight shot into the throttle body.

you'll probably gain some good horsepower at 160 mph . . maybe ~20. other than that its not useful except for the cold air . . . which is a pretty good thing.
i didn't notice much of a increase in power per say, but i did notice a pretty good increase in responsiveness. throttle response got alot better in my car, but yours is another beast and may or may not have the same results.

I need a set of those spark plugs that were mentioned earlier

Unless you modify the engine to the point where it needs more air, don't expect too much from this setup.

Thanks bud.I live up in High Level.I'm planning on getting the ram air hood this winter once she's parked. That's when I'm getting her re-painted.If you like I'll take some close up pictures of it to see what you think. It will need to be sanded down and preped properly. On the top of the hood there are some cracks not in the fiberglass but in the paint.I think the previous owner didn't get the prep work needed before they splashed the hood.If you like we could arrange something.I do make frequent trips to Edmonton.I put the 18's on and they fit nice with no rubbing.

put it on and u are going to see the diference man, trust me

so yeah could i get some close ups of the hood if possible, and how much would you want for it?

Well if you have an 86 TPI I assume it's MAF. That means your intake is nowhere near the top/front of the plenum so where is all these cold dense ram air going? Does this hood come with custom intake ducts and provisions for your MAF? If not then I wouldn't expect any performance gains besides weight savings.

If you are going from a stock TBI intake setup, then yes, just because its so restrictive. But Ram Air is a myth, it's a really good marketing ploy by GM to sell cars and it worked. If you already have a good flowing TPI setup or carb, then no I don't think you will see any improvements. just my .02

Ram Air will in fact help, if you need it..Alot of times the air is so hot under the hood, that your timing has to be backed off a tad....Anything you can do to cool the fuel and air down to a certain point will help....Cool cans, and Ram Air are common at the drag strip...How much it will help, I cant say, but it always made me feel good to know my engine was getting nice clean cool outside air rather than the old hot crap under the hood.....The trick is to get a good seal between the hood, or air intake, and whatever you are feeding your motor with (Carb, TBI,ECT)....At very hi speed there is a slight supercharging effect, but that will have no bearing on a street car......It was a great marketing ploy in the 60's and 70's..I think Chrysler had the jump on the Ram Air setups, tho I know others will have different ideas.........Take Care....
Thanks for the info bud.
