Alright, well I bought my camaro about 3 years ago...then my (now wife) got pregnant so it put everything on hold. At the time I had someone that was going to help me with the body work. But over the last 3 years that has gone away....So Now I am on my own, trying to teach myself body work.

I could use some help on thing like what
Tools I will need,
How high of grits I need to use.
Basic Dews and Don’ts
Techniques

Anything you guys think that might help me.

Also remember I am not doing a full body resto...Just want to make it look clean on the outside....I also have the engine out so I want to do the engine bay as well.

I know this might be asking allot....but any little bit of help I can get would be great!

 

go to a local bookstore or library. They have plenty of books some in more detail then others. It might be a wise $25 investment so you can get a crash course about bodywork.

i am doing the same thing right now and have looked many places and found lots of info.
you can do a search on a specific task as you go ,also car craft just did a paint & body series the past few issues .alot of basic info in there if you can get the back issues.
one more option as far as body prep for paint is the supplier who sells the paint.

it is a long tedious process that needs to be done right the first time or you will be doing it again.

Hit the books huh? I've read countless magazines which offered nothing detailed enough to be helpful, i'll start reading books.

 

What I am doing now, more than I ever used to (many years ago) is Block Sand...I think the wavy finish that shows bodywork flaws needs block sanding to straighten the surface. I hope all the hand work pays off cause it is much easier to use an air or electric sander. I,m using the smallest amout of body filler...but tons of layers of primer,spot & glaze then block sanding.

 

we have a few auto parts shop thats specialize in mixing auto paint and selling body work materials, when i was buying some paint to redo my hatch they told me everything i needed and how to do the body work correctly. also asking qeustions here or using the search works great!

 

Thats what I am doing....but i am not using alot of filler and it semms like every talks about how much filler the use then sand of so i wasnt sure if i was doing something wrong...

 

bring back some old stuff,

search "project resurection"

complete ground up restor i did here with the help of the members. great refrence info. i think it should bring up about 4 post combined
