Mystery popping door help

I have a 1987 z28 camaro. My passenger side door always pops when i open it. I looked at the ground effect kit (the stock one i think comes equipped with all z28's) And it is kind bent inward im guessing this is my problem any ideas on a way to fix both these problems? I thought of taking off that side ground effect trim and put it back on. Thank you for your time.

Well it open just regular i guess but at some point it feels like it hit a spot...then you push it a tad bit harder then normal and then it pops and feels regular again.

could it be in the hinge itself? when you open it and it pops or hits a hard spot, look down and see if you can find a place where the ground effects are hitting. if they are not im gonna suggest you look at the hinge pins, the hinge has a little roller and a piece of metal with different cuts in it so when you open your door it stays in position till you shut it. that roller can become weak and fly around, its like that on mine, itll be difficult to push in but once i pass that point, it goes in no problem.

sounds like you have worn hinge pins & bushings [ common on third gens ] not too hard to fix . lots of info here on this site on how to . if you take door off [ its heavy ] remove door and hinge together . do not loosen bolts on door , and before you touch bolts on body remove inner kick panels , you will see the bolts for the hinge [ take your time , it will save you a lot of time ] then drill 2 , 1/8th in. holes in upper rt. and lower lt. through body and hinge [ both hinges ] when you re- install door you will have 4 alignment points ,[ i use #4 finish nails to align ] , and you will be at factory settings if its the factory door . much better than a pencil mark for alignment . [ also good on hood removal & replacement ] there is a site [91rsramair] that shows some how to [ dont use wire on the spring , there is a special clamp for this , advance , auto zone . etc. ,wil rent , return for your deposit ] hope this helps . i am doing this before i get new paint . lots of luck . hope this helps . uncle tom , ret. acft. mechanic

Ill bet the popping noise isnt in the hinges....

Ill bet its the little detent roller that is supposed to keep the door opened when its at either of the two positions that is stays open in. They get worn out, and rust forms, or the little wheels break all together. Try it...spray some white lithium grease on that little roller, and see if it goes away for a bit. It probably will.

Im going to rebuild my hinges pretty soon, and I just bought everything from Lon at Top Down Solutions. It was alittle expensive, but I got hinge repair kits, new strikers, springs, detent rollers and even some tools to make the job easier.

Here is a picture from Lon's site to show you the part that Im talking about...

Good luck! Post up what it actually once you track it down...

Justin

Well right now the car is away at my parents ill have it back in a few days so ill start tracking then but on another note i have to fix the doors hinges anyways because they are sagging and i also seen this kit you were talking about 220 bucks or so i think for 2 doors. That will prolly take care of the popping and the sagging. Ty guys for the info ill keep yall posted as i go thru it.
