Should I shave my gas cap?
I started the body work on my car a couple years ago and never really got around to finishing it. The main reason being is the pain in the *** dent I have right over the gas cap I couldnt get it perfectly straight so and I don't want to paint the car until the body is perfect. I plan on having a professional fix it, but would it be easier to just shave it?

if you shave it, where are you gonna put the gas in?? you cant run a pipe inside the car cause thats just dangerous..
if worse comes to worse, try to make it as straight as possible and load it with bondo.. i'm sure a pro body guy can make it straight.. get a quote from them..

It's already been loaded with bondo by me and that's the best I could get it. You're probably right about a professional being able to fix it, but it seems like it'd be difficult since the dent is actually around the gas cap.

well since you put it like that, you could consider a new quarter panel.. quite some work but it will fix your problem.. and be perfectly straight

You're just going to create headaches by not fixing the real problem... I'm at a loss to how you'd fill the tank though... you'd have to switch to a fuel cell or something along those lines.
Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
Ever think of looking for a cheap gas cap on here or ebay? I wouldn't see a problem if there were a way to get gas in, but there's not much room to work with.

Where did you reroute the filler cap to? (picture above)
Edit: nevermind, just visited your cardomain site. Kind of annoying to pop the hatch everytime you fill up though, isn't it?

Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
if u got a little time on ur hands u could probably use a slide hammer and pop it out further and then may be use a metal body filler instead of bondo its a little more expensive but for bigger stuff its better
Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
Or you can shave it form the side and use a caprice gas tank to route it behind the license plate. Not saying it would work though, without alot of work at least. I started a topic a while back about doing this such thing in the fabrication forum and it concluded that it would be more work than it would actually benefit. Would look trick though.

Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
i dont see how it would work routing it to the plate area, its lower on the bumper then a on a caprice. kinda hard to pump gas against gravity. ive seen some cars where the gas cap is behind the tail light, thats a cool mod... too much work for me tho
Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
yeah if you route it to behind the plate you sttl have to worry about the hatch, and it will still have to be modified to run right through the middle of your trunk area. just leave it where it is and try one of those alluminum or billit cas cap covers. ive nver seen one of those on a thrid gen.
or even better find a way to rig it up so that you can put the gas can on the outer part of the car, like on the old chargers or vipers.

It would look good under the licence plate, Torino's had a nice setup with it being under a gas door in the back, here's a pic. It would be alot of work to put it under the licence plate, but might be worth it.

You could easily reroute the filler to behind the tail light and make it hinge out.
If you wanted to get all fancy you could make it an electronic hinge.

bingo. thats exactly what i did
the filler neck will come through the glove box in the back and there will be no need to open the hatch to fill the tank. the hole system will also be sealed from the cabin of the car to keep the smells out

you should fab up some hatch pulldown style motor or firebird headlight style motor for the light.
i think something with a secure up/down position would work best.

Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
Gonna bump this thread. Im abougt to primer my car. I already have the fuel cell mounted in my hatch. And this go me to wondering how hard is it to have the gas cap? And whats the best way to do it?
Re: Should I shave my gas cap?
have ever done any sheet metal work before. it is like adding a patch panel, cut a panel to fit and start tacking it in place, grind welds and bondo, it would be similar to patching up floor pans, minus the bondo. i will let you know how bad it is to do when i finish swaping the roof on my car
