the insurance just got a look at it today.. i had to limp it home to my cousins house who lived around there.. its been there all this week and i made him snap some pics for me.. doesn't look good ey

I don't understand... how hard did he hit you?? The rear bumper and exhaust pipes hardly look damaged, yet the frame is bent? Are these cars weak framed?

 

yea that the same thing i was thinking u would think with a hit that hard it would mess the lights tips and break the rear glass, if i was up i would buy back from the insurents company stripp it and rebuild a new car

 

Perhaps it's one of the crumple zones, but in my opinion, it crumpled way too early and wasted the car. It seems like such a waste to throw out such a car. That's what scares me about restoring my car.. I could spend tons of cash and gallons of sweat rebuilding a car... but I could get into an accident I'm not even to blame for, get screwed over with insurance companies going by their "blue books." I think that in such cases you could bring your case to the courts and be compensated a bit more, but would still not even come close to making you feel better.

 

Man, I'm really sorry to see that. Hope you get a new one. That damage is really strange though. What hit you? Seems odd that the quarters would crumple like that and the bumper, tail lights and hatch look untouched.

 

Does it depend (the ammount of damage) on if it was a car or a taller SUV? I hope you don't get discouraged and get another thirdgen. You did a great job on that one. I know I would be swapping those rims of there and probably my stereo too if they are going to total the car. Might as well get a leg up on your next car.

 

yeah i'm curious as to what hit you also, i mean the quarters hit both doors and buckled the roof on the driver side, but the back lights and spoiler are ok?

 

Know what that almost looks like? As if he was carrying a too heavy trailer at the top of a hill or something. The rear end was forced down obviously. If the suv/car/truck that hit him was too high, the rear end should of been forced up, if it was a lower vehicle, it would of struck square onto the supports. Only thing I can think of is if some car was coming from the top of a steep hill and struck him with a downforced speed while he was stopped at the edge of the hill. meh? make sense?

 

Man sorry for the loss, its 2 bad these cars where not stronger. Ive seen them bend like that in 5 mph collisions. You should find a really nice shell and switch all the parts over.

 

Dang man, that is horrible! If someone did that to my car I'd be in jail cause I'd put them in the hospital.

Looks just like my 91 did when i was hit in the rear by a minivan. These cars are designed to crumple just like that. My rear glass broke as well.

well what hit me was one of those late 80's dodge vans.. not a minivan. those gigantic vans that a little ladder on the back.. umm yeah my plan is to get a shell and transfer all my stuff.. the interior is super clean, i just rebuilt the tranny ( I had exactly one weeek with my car after getting a $1,700 tranny rebuild and some aftermarket parts on it) when they rear ended me on the HIGHWAY. The L98 is still in great shape too. the guy fled and I chased his a$$ and marked down his plates. I'm gonna sue the $hit out of him.. and they're gonna get him too for hit and run.

 

He's not very bright if he thinks his van can outrun your camaro.

yyyyup.. my girlfriend managed to mark down the plates so I reported them to the police and to my insurance.. hopefully they give me some dough and they let me keep the car 'cause I want to get a shell and transfer the drivetrain to another car.. i dont want to buy another one.. just have a 'heart transplant' i guess you can say. Damn, and my IROC was my first car too.. I bought it when I was 17 But $hit happens I guess.. I only have liability insurance too.. I dont know what they're gonna tell me I'm dreading it

Now the insurance company, if he had any, will rear end you again. But if he ran he proably doesnt have any or a pot to **** in. If you have just liability....that sucks.

Wow, I would be really angry and chase him just as you did. I just got a 1987 Camaro a week ago and took it to work on saturday. When I came out I saw white paint on the fender (nothing big, just about an inch long line) and flipped out. There was a white car next to mine and I looked over every inch of it looking for some proof but found none. I was really angry about even that. I feel for you.

I can't get over those pictures. It looks like you took a bump and the quarter panels just crumpled before the bumper even moved. Is anyone else concerned about preventing something like that? What else is bent under the car? Anyway, I hope everything works out well for you, and if not you have a bunch of angry thirdgeners to go mess that guy up for you

 

haha wouldn't that be nice.. all you come down to socal and we'll find that sucka.. bust a cap.. in all seriousness.. they gave me an estimate of like $3,143 in body work.. parts and labor.. I'm sure that didn't include frame work. I haven't yet seen it underneath or had it checked out yet.. its still chillin' there. Yeah, they told me i was not at fault and its just a matter of time 'till I am able to squeeze some dough out of that *****.

 

I've seen a few like that, which were repaired. Problem with these cars these days is the book value isn't likely to be high enough to cover the costs.

Hopefully you can settle without going to court. That's a hassle. Winning a judgment is the easy part.. collecting is the hard part. From the fact that the guy took off, I'd say he's likely to do whatever to get out of paying

ur in so cal i know a verry good shop in la that fixed my frame, about a year ago i ran over a center divider at like 90 or so, my rims were bent and trashed and my frame was bent to the pont where my new rims were like rubbing agaisnt the wheel well. numerous shops and peopl told me the car was trashed and to just get a donor, but they were able to fix it and i still have the car now rides, good and is straight only thing i was told was that in any future collision the frame would be weaker because of the rewelding but thats bound to happen in any 3rd gen if u have a big front end collsion the car. good luck though.

 

FWIW Can't say about where you are, I had an old Oldsmobile got hit just after I rebuilt the motor, trans a week after new paint, the ins company wanted to give me less than I paid for paint. I gave them all my receipts for the work I had done. Since it was all pretty recent they changed the claim and paid me what I had spent, totaled it and sold it back for $100. Maybe if you show them proof what work had been, it might not repair your loss but you might get more than book value. Might not help you but couldn't hurt to try.

 

That car can be repaired. Whether or not you want to spend the money on it or not is the decision. You would be amazed what just a few hours on a frame machine will do to this type of damage. Most of the panels will pull back to where they were. The passenger quarter can be saved for sure, the driver's side will probably need a replacement. It would certainly be easier to move the good parts over to another shell if you do not have a capable frame shop in your area, but a solid repair is possible. No doubt, the insurance co will total it with that damage based on the book value that these cars carry now. Your floor and inner quarters will largely return to their proper positions and shapes as the pull is made on the frame machine. Good luck. Oldtimer.

 

Hey man, did you ever get it fixed? Coincidently, I got rear ended by a van Wednesday, and the damage on my 84 z28 is nearly identical. After doing it he promptly put his car in reverse, got into the other lane, ran a red light and kept driving. No tags.

. /sigh

I can't post pics, though as I said before the damage is nearly identical. Anyone have any idea what kind of repair bill I'm looking at?

It's not gonna be cheap. And it all depends on what shops around you will charge, kinda like a paint job. It's probably best to look for a donor to swap everything over too. You can get a roller for like, $500. Get it painted with everything out so you get full paint coverage, and start swapping.

It kinda looks like it did a really hard launch with no SFCs.....Ive seen alot worse repaired

 

Bloody Hell!! A beautiful blue IROC ruined by some incompetent s.o.b. . . should of just shot him and cleaned out his bank account. Is the drivetrain messed up??? I hate seeing nice IROC's get wrecked by some blithering idiot. Poor thing kinda just crunched up like a soda can. But, at least it did its job and kept you from getting hurt.

 

I just cant believe he tryed to run....not grounds for killing in my book, but a serious a$$ stomping
