Do you think its fixable?

I was driving down the interstate on monday and I was about 2 car lengths behind the car infront of me. Well traffic started to come to a stop and this truck came up beside me and tried to fit in the spot between me and the car infront of me. He ended up hitting the 2007 BMW infront of me and I had no where to go so I ran into his truck, well mostly the trailer hitch, which barely got a scratch on it. I was wondering if you think they will total my car or if it looks fixable. What I'm most worried about is those 2 pictures under the hood where it looks like that part of the frame that the radiator is attached to is bent back, because you can see my battery and radiator pushed back a lot more than they should be, will a body shop be able to fix that. Man this guys insurance is going to pay, i miss my baby already

Thats good to hear. Yeah I walked away just fine, the accident happened at like 25 or 30 mph because I was slamming on my brakes when I hit the truck, so I didn't hit that hard, that was just one strong trailer hitch, they shouldn't be able to have them things on their trucks if they aren't towing anything.

LOL I leave mine on my truck for that purpose. been hit many times in parking lots from some idiot backing in to me. A trailer hitch comes off the receiver about 4 inches, if you are with in 4 inches of the bumper of the truck you have other issues. I would rather replace a 25$ drop hitch then the rear bumper and quarter of my truck.

Re: Do you think its fixable?

Looks repairable to me. Not even too terribly difficult. That piece is pretty easy to bend.

However, it's just about 100% certain that they'll total it anyway. You'll have to buy a hood, fender, bumper cover, light bar, maybe the bumper reinforcement and crush pieces, misc trim, and so forth; plus paint and labor.

But if you think you can deal with all that, buy it back from them after they total it.

Re: Do you think its fixable?

If you rearended him isn't it your fault? I mean so he pulled in front of you and hit the car in front of him. All he is going to say is you pushed him into the other car, generally the last car involved in rearend accidents that involve multiple cars is the one thats blamed. Well thats what california is like maybe your state is different.

Re: Do you think its fixable?

Well the way that it happened the police officer said that it wasn't my fault because from him cutting me off he didn't leave me sufficient room to manuever out of his way to avoid the accident, so since I had no where to go and he pretty much caused the accident when he cut me off

Re: Do you think its fixable?

I don't know, the insurance company is giving me the runaround right now, I still haven't even got a damage estimate yet, I hope I never have to deal with USAA again. Somehow the lady working on my case got to take like 10 days of vacation and no one else could help me with my claim because it was HER claim, thats some BS. But hopefully she calls me tomorrow.

Re: Do you think its fixable?

Yep, an easy fix, but it'll total out dollar wise. I would let them settle with you and retain the salvage if they let it go for a reasonable amount. I know that most insurers would be happy to net out 10-15% of retail for a salvage piece at auction. They will have to tow the car to the yard, pay fees, etc. to the auction. Use that to your favor. Expect the offer to be pretty good, as most states require NADA retail figures to be used in settling total losses. If you are happy with the offer, but want to keep the car, play up the damages. Let them know that the car is tore up, a basketcase, finished, etc., but you might be interested in keeping it. Make a low dollar offer to keep the car, and work your angle on the now "worthless" car that will cost them money to move, auction, etc. Keep bitching up the chain until you get a manager to see it your way. Do not let them take the car away until you decide if you are keeping it or not. Once they tow it to the yard, you've lost the advantage, and they won't tow it back to you for free. I AM under the assumption that they will find you 100% free of fault here. All bets are off if some sort of comparative negligence is hung on you. Good Luck! Oldtimer.
