Rusted deck lid
Hey guys, the underside of my hatch deck lid has a good amount of rust on it. See the pictures attached. Im debating if I should just scrap it and throw a new one on or try and sand and grind it away. How much does a used deck lid go for?
RUST! (It looks like it goes down kinda deep cant see it in the pics though. It worries me bc its around those plastic caps so im guessing its all the way through.

Re: Rusted deck lid
Ouch! You could try to POR-15 it. Its petty bad & it is still gonna keep rusting on the inside. I'd just try and find a good replacement. Sorry!

take all the plastic plugs off and take a real corse disk and stand grinding i bet you can take most of it off, then get rust mort and cover that with por 15..

Re: Rusted deck lid
those plastic caps give access to the nuts that hold the spoiler on . i had mine off a couple mos. ago . [ looks bad to me ] take your spoiler off and you can better view the damage . seems to me when the car was last painted the spoiler was removed and no sealer put around studs that hold spoiler on . rains , water gets inside , no place to go = rust from the inside . i have not changed one so i can offer no advice except sealent , silicone , bath tub sealent , bubble gum ? around studs before re-install of spoiler . good luck .

Re: Rusted deck lid
Looks just like mine
Mine was repainted at some point and I'm pretty sure they either forgot or did a bad job with sealing up the spoiler bolt holes. Unfortunately mine needs to be replaced.. yours doesn't look all that great. If you start grinding that rust out and it goes through to the other side you are probably going to have to replace it.
As far as I know, this is NOT something you can get anywhere other than used.

Re: Rusted deck lid
Yea, you guys bring up a good point about the sealant on the spoiler bolts. I ill bet $20 that when I pop those caps of that there wont be any seals or anythign aroudn the bolts. I say this bc the last guy that painted it did a real half *** job and painted over rust spots and crap so now im in the process of undoing this damage.
Well Ill pop the caps off and if its rusted really abd on the inside Im most likely going to get a replacement deck lid with a z 28 high rise on it. Good excuse to change over lol.
Thanks Guys!

Re: Rusted deck lid
HA well heres the result http://images1.filecloud.com/589693/DSC02412.JPG . Popped out the caps with a screwdriver and when i took the one out in the picture the rust just collapsed through it was that bad. Took the spoiler off and there was about 1/10 of the rupper washer seal left on the bolt
...time for a new deck lid.

Re: Rusted deck lid
it depends, I just picked up a deck lid the glass still attached and the spoiler for $20... people that are parting out cars will sell them for dirt cheap.
