roll cage or subframe connectors.

since winter has arived or is very close.
my camaro is off the road now due to winter hehe.
well since its off the road. im putting in a 383 im building right now.
but i would need to add stuff to the body of the car to stiffin it up with the added power. my car has t-tops if that helps with anything.

my question is. should i go with a cage or get subframe connectors??
i found a 8 point cage on jegs for $152.99
i have a welder so i could weld it up.
it be a fun little project and the cage i think is very cheap.
or is it a better idea to get subframe connectors?? or perhaps both??
or would a 4 point roll bar be better? its $129.99
i found Global West subframe connectors are $196.99 on jegs as well.
there was different brands of sub connectors. ranging in prices from about $100 to $300.

i havnt check out summit for prices but i would think there about the same price.

im going to eventryally make my car mostly for the drag strip. so ill eventrally need a cage. i jsut need some opinions. get cages and slowly add on to the cage? or get subframe connectors and when my car is at the point of a cage. go and get a cage?

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i could upgrade the 8 point to a 10 point for $103.99
or go totally wild and get the 10 point for $224.99.
insted of buying the 8 point. and waiting till the car needs the 10 point.
what do you guys thinks?

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i'd get jegs brand bolt in subframe connectors and after installing them also weld them in, they have bigger brackets and weld to more parts of the chassis that way.

I have an 8 point roll bar as well, this is good to 9.99 in the 1/4 mile, if you feel the need for a 10 point, they sell 10 points instead of the upgrade 8 to 10 point kit.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i like cages, but without a harness and helmet, they can be hazardous all by themselves. i'd vote for the subframe connectors

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

8 point would be fine without a helmet being that there's no way your head could come back far enough still attached to your body to hit the main hoop, at least how i placed my main hoop. Although I do drive it on the street with full padding on the roll bar and 5 point harnesses.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i been looking at the 8 point roll bars. would they acturally stiffin up the frame as much as subframe connectors?
im planning on getting some racing style seats with the harness some time soon.
if its a better deal for me to get the 8 point roll bar i would add padding to it. you never know.
i like cages. so im kinad leaning towards it more.
but if the subframes are better for stiffing the frame then an 8 point i would get the subframes.
by the way. could you build your own subframe connectors?? or be cheaper to buy them online?
im sure it be cheaper then trying to hand build a cage, buying the piping and bending.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i have a stroker in my 84 TA now and you really need the subframe connectors because all it does is twist because how the frame is designed. Getting a cage is a toss up because u need one for your own safety and for track rules at certain E.T's

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

yeah i just talked to my friend about this and head said a 8 point roll bar would stiffin it pretty good.
i was thinking of just getting both. cant hurt.
im putting a 383 stroker that should be hopefully over 500 hp. ill have to take it to a dyno shop and get it rated for power
anyways. back to topic.
i found a 10 point cage for about $75 more then the 8 point so im kinda leaning towards that. i found subframe connectors for about the same price as a 8 point.
i have racing seats that im getting and the harness so im not worryed about that. im also going to add padding around the bars on the cage if i do plan on getting it.

its still a toss up on what i want to get i would like to install it during the winter so its all ready and done once summer arived.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

im doing a 12 pt and a full frame in mine. this winter. but im proably tryin to go a little faster than you. it will be streetable. not a street car. sould run somewhere between 8.5 and 90s.
----------
if i was building it to just drive i would only do a 6pt. two bars forward. the hoop and two bars back. would stiffen it but not be ugly.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i would like to go 12 point and have a tubular type frame. then i know i have it for future use. but at this point. i dont have that much money to play around for that kind of stuff at the moment. since christmas is near
its eather a 8 point, 10 point or sub frame connectors. 10 point isnt much more then an 8 point. so thats i i added it into my budget.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

Start with SFCs. Yes, you can build you own for WAY cheaper than store bought ones. I've seen double SFCs run. One set going outwards, along the rocker panels pinch welds, another set going inwards, then tying to the tranny crossmember & tunnel.

Combine those with a 6pt minimum, preferably 8 pt minimum for track use, and your good.

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

yeah i was thinking about getting both.
and also building my own. dont look hard to build anyways.
i also saw they had 4 point roll bars for i think just under $100. $92 or so? i cant remember. ill do some more price checking and combos.
i really dont want to chance of bending the frame with the power plant im sticking in there,

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

i already stated to get both. depends on what ET you want to run on the 8 point or 10 point. subframes are first though, need them BEFORE the cage

Re: roll cage or subframe connectors.

hey, i'm all for fabrication, but you need to know what you're doing. if you're experienced in this stuff, then go for it, but a couple of hundred bucks ain't a lot of cash for something that's made square and has good welds. i can weld, but i am not a WELDER. when it comes to my suspension, i'll get help or buy parts.
