Bolt on vs pin on/lift off cowl hood

I have a 1991 camaro and I need to get a hood for it. About the cheapest i could find besides the stock hood was a 4'' cowl on ebay. I was just wondering what everyone thinks is better a bolt on or pin on/lift off cowl hood. Also with the pin on/lift off hood is there just front pins that hold it on or is there something in the back that holds the back down.

with a pin on/lift off, its not attached to hinges, so you would need at least 4 pins holding it down. so everytime you go to open your hood, you gota lift the whole thing off. and not to rag on your manlyhood, but i dont think your going to be able to lift it off by yourself. lol. so i would go with a bolt on if i were you.

I had to lift off and put back a stock one few times now, so its not impossible to take off fiberglass ones. Stock one is a heavy sob tho
Get bolt on one if budget allows it, otherwise pin on is cheapest just going to be awkward taking it off.

haha yea well i wouldnt have made that joke if he had said it was a fiberglass one. i assumd it was a steel cowl, which would be even heavier that the stock one. lol.

It depends on what your really using the car for. If it's mostly a strip car then a pin-on is most cost effective. Pin-on's are a pain on the street, god hope the wind doesn't take off with your hood when you're fixing something.

your car looks really good, I guess mine would look similar to that with a cowl hood cause its a 1991 z28 and has the same wing. Thats a 4'' cowl right? Does it pin down in the back as well as the front?

not to mention possible fender damage when you let it slip...it's not a matter of if..just when....also if you go with a fiberglass hood you will need to get new hood shocks for like a 84 model that came with the glass hoods or you will crack the s*!t out of it.

Re: Bolt on vs pin on/lift off cowl hood

pin: light, cheap, awkward, harder to fit to car (locating pins)
bolt-on: heavier, more expensive, fits easier, operates just like stock.

which do you want? forget opinions other than your own.

Re: Bolt on vs pin on/lift off cowl hood

you can still bolt on some pin on hoods and just have pins up front. Then you still use your stock hinges...

when i was trying to mold a steel cowl to my factory hood at school i had to lift and move the hood by myself a couple of times. i must say if you have long enough arms its not too hard. but i have heard that i have the reach of a gorilla so maybe im just weird.

No. A pi-on hood has no inner structure with "nuts" (threads) to allow bolts to hold to. Pin-ons use 4 pins minimum, bolt-ons are not required to use 2 front pins, but many people will disagree & say they are still required or the hood will peel off. Having had cars with 2 bolt-on hoods & no pins....I can say that is incorrect if you use a good quality hood. I didn't have pins on either car & both held up just fine in both daily driving & racing autocross.

It use shocks, but you would need to find some made for the early 3rd gens that came stock with a fiberglass hood or use "worn out" steel hood shocks. Typically when a steel hood shock wears out & won't hold the steel hood up good, it is just about perfect for holding up the much lighter fiberglass hoods.

Re: Bolt on vs pin on/lift off cowl hood

yes, it uses factry hinges, which is were the hood stocks mount. if you get a fiberglass hood, you need softer shocks or it will contantly be pushing up on the hood way harder than it should with it closed and latched down. and it runs the risk of cracking the hood latch on the hood.
