Does your hood lift one side first?
I have my 1986 Iroc in the body shop right now. They are trying to properly align the hood, fenders and doors right now (before paint). They got it right but when opening the hood you just cant pull from the center and lift straight up, you have to lift one side before the other. This has been the usual behavior since I've had the Iroc about 10 years ago.
My question is is this normal for all hoods? or is it mine only? Maybe shocks too weak?

Check the hinge stops.Their screwed into the fender, behind the hinges. If one is not there or they are uneven heights, that could be one cause of your problem.

My hood does it, and I have to lift it kinda slowly. It's like one side gets stuck or something. I'm thinking the hinges may need lubricating.

Mine does it too (not all the time), but only the first quarter of the way up. THe shocks arent the problem in mine, because once they are level, they both go up smooth, and they both close the same.
My bro's 83 z28 did the same thing with an IROC hood. (he didnt have any shocks at all). So i think its just the hinges. They are easy to "twist".
I just open the hood slowly.

Yet another with the same problem. Just lubricated the heck out of the hinges with a wet graphite lube, just hit every moving point in the hood setup and it opens straight and smooth. Tends to stay in place and not wash away for a good long time too.

I guess so!
It was especially frustrating on my berlinetta i owned previous. It had a factory "fiberglass" hood, and i definately bent it because of this same issue.
The only thirdgen that didnt give me this problem, was a 1988 RS parts car i had. It had the steel hood.

Re: Does your hood lift one side first?
Thank you for your replies. The hood is the stock Iroc-Z metal one. The shocks are new, although they feel weak.
Do you think we should try to fix it into lifting straight up? Or is it a PITA to get it right? As I said, it's been like that since we've had the car, but I'd like it better if it would lift straight up, but if it's too hard, I'll drop the idea.

Re: Does your hood lift one side first?
I truly wouldn't worry about it unless it hits the paint on the fenders or something. Maybe if it also messes the fiberglass hoods up then i would change it. Other then that my Rs and iroc-z do the same thing and they both have new hood shocks.

Re: Does your hood lift one side first?
Same story here. One side tends to lag behind the other the first 1/4-1/2 way up and my hood struts are about a year old. They did the exact same thing when they were new as they do now. Also, they did the exact same thing with the old hood struts, so I'm also gonna vote hinges. I dont really care, but after removing the hood for my neverending engine swap nightmare, and ahving to manually pus the hinges back down and seeing how much they flop around, I'm even more positive it's the hinges.

Same story here...
92 V6 RS; opens straight and smooth with junk hood struts.
91 V8 RS; opened crooked with junk hood struts, replaced them and it still opens weird.
Both with factory steel hoods.
