Fiberglass rear deck

im trying to get some more weight off the car but am running out of ideas. I came up with a fiberglass rear deck lid (trunk) instead of the factory one but wanted to know what the weight savings would be and if worth the trouble. thanks

Re: Fiberglass rear deck

if your taking about the whole rear hatch. like a notchback. yes they are fiberglass but they weigh as much as the stock glass. plus you lose so areodynamics with the notch.

Absolutely not - you lose about 70lbd with a fiberglass notchback (at least the one I have. Not sure about the aero portion since no one has ever done real testing on it.

Eh, probably. But you'd probably lose more if you replaced your rear glass with lexan than going to a notchback. But I wouldn't do it to a daily driver.

Also, replacing the decklid with a fiberglass one probably isn't going to save you much weight at all, if any, and you'll probably lose some strength in the decklid for mounting your spoiler. You'd probably have to use some large *** washers to spread the load.

Heres the lexian back window. if your worried about weight, this would take a lot off. that rear window is extremely heavy.

Re: Fiberglass rear deck

wait a minute

here are the cons
ugly first and formost
reduction of aerodynamic
rear sight reduction-causing more thirdgen to die
taking wieght off the rear wheel- bad for street cars good for drag cars

pros
maybe if you drag race and you have fiberglass door and front clip- maybe

Re: Fiberglass rear deck

that lexan back window seems like the best idea to me. it keeps the original shape of the rear end, and im sure it weighs a lot less since its not solid glass like the originals.

Keep in mind, Lexan is more like plastic than glass. That's why I said I wouldn't use it in a daily driver. Scratches in Lexan aren't going to come out as easily and you really run a risk in the winter time in particularly.

If he's building a track car or something, ok, but there's a reason lexan glass isn't DOT approved.

Around here you can goto the truck scales and weigh your car. Often times the scales can be seen thru the window even if they're closed.

I will admit, they look better on a NICE car. but i still think it looks to much like a fiero. a meaner looking fiero. your car is beautiful though. it does work for the firebirds but i think it looks like crap on a camaro.

and yes the lexan prolly would be for either show cars or race cars only. winter would be hell lol. but id say if your looking to take weight off your car 90% of the time its for racing anyway. and if you want to take some weight off id look more to the interior and maybe some fiberglass fenders and hoods. just my opinion.

Re: Fiberglass rear deck

I will admit, when I first saw my car I saw the notchback as a turn off. the first words I spoke when I saw it were "Dammit its a notchback" but when I got up close it did look very good. You have to see it in person, it does look pretty good... I still might put a hatchback on mine, because the black paint keeps warping the fiberglass on the notch... it looks like hell up close now.. but its a factory AA8 notchback and is decently rare because of it, so That's why I'm only thinking about it. Oh and I cant imagine the notch being any lighter than the regular hatch, its pretty damn heavy. Oh yeah, and I'm getting an Ebach pro kit for it in the spring...

my chassis guy rolls the car and puts it on 4 scales to check the weight at each tire in order to adjust the suspension. you can also go to the nearest truck stop and use their scale, its usually only about $5-6 and you get a print out with the weight

Re: Fiberglass rear deck

lol im def NOT running pink wheels lol. only color on our third gen wheels should be chrome/aluminum/black. those stupid fart cans are the ones that paint their wheels like a rainbow.

and i think the notchback is startin to grow on me, but id still prefer hatch just for the aerodynamics and the easy view through the rear view mirror.

so whats up redformula88? what you gonna do to lose some weight lol.

ive already switched back to a glass hatch, notchback is for sale. but like MichaelSparks88 said run what you like. those useless comments like BigBadGTA said just discourage those from actually doing what they like instead of what the stock ***** tell them to do

man I just have to say that doing things like painting your wheels is for the people you want to customize there rides without actually doing some work or spending money which is ok

just try to keep it away from us people who are super serious about these cars
