I KNOW THIS IS NOT THE BEST IDEA AND I CAN NOT AFFORD PAINT FOR ABOUT 2 YEARS AND I HAVE TRYED SEARCHING FOR OTHER POST ............BUT

The areas of the car that are already primered are starting to get rust on them I would really like to have a single color instead of waiting 2 years.

i would do it if i didnt have the money to get a paint job specially if i knew that i would have to wait 2 years. and to tell you the truth flat black is in style. lol
but no on a real note that guys car didnt look bad at all to me when it was done. i say go for it man.!!

Rattle can is such a PITA.

Do you have a compressor? If you do, you can get a cheap paint gun at Harbor Freight for $20 or less and try this stuff:



Places like autozone carry it, its $20/quart. You can get primer and clear coat and it's a legitimate laquer paint job. The stuff is prethinned and ready to shoot, just stir, strain, and pour. There is about 13 colors available and you can even get a metal flake clear.

You can even mix two colors together to get your own color.

Here are the original colors, they have since added more, like the metal flake I mentioned:


They recommend:
4qts. - Compact
5qts. - Mid-Size
6 qts. - Full Size

So you're looking at roughly.... $160-$200 for paint.

Hot Rod magazine even followed up on this process and it actually works. In fact I think if you skip to the back of the thread, they even found a way to minimize the number of coats by switching to a different type of paint.

I think it costs on average $20 for paint to do a job like that. The downside is the incredible amount of sanding you have to do.

Ths is the same thing I posted above from the mopar forum except the mopar forum is where this was allegedly first reported and where the Hot Rod article originated. There is 100X more information on the forums and you can actually talk to people who did it.

I'm suggesting he either try that or the dupli color lacquer. Not because I'm a purist, but because rattle can just sucks. There's such a small fan radius that it would take forever to paint an entire car and something like 30 cans of spray paint for decent coverage. If I had to spray 30 cans of spray paint on any surface eventually my patience would wear thin and I'd have runs or worse, not to mention my wrists would be tired from shaking all those cans.

30 cans? I used 14 or 15 once I haD ALL the body work done on my car. throw down one coat then give it a light scuff with a scoth brite then another and again with the scoth brite and it comes out rather smooth

 

damn, beat me to it! i thought about doing that myself, but thats to much time that i dont have.

 

I have looked in to the roll paint time and time again but the time factor of having to do so many coats then do that TON of sanding.

I just can't take this whole regular color/primer,fading color and clear coat fly off down the road.

But like on that link that I have to the spray job, For all the after shots I mean it looks pretty good and even if it looks bad right up close that wouldn't bother me. I'll take something that looks as decent as that does before I would enjoy driving down the road with my current paint scheme

 

my 83 z28 was flat black, slammed with limo tint. i say go for it. flat black is tough looking.

 

Does anyone have any pictures of their rattle can spray jobs or maybe some advice on what and what not to do about it?
I already have one of those trigger deals that goes on top of the can with a handle so that should reduce on the fatigue.

 

look at stephen 87 iroc, he is a mod, his car was flat black, it has flames now, but i think he has pics before the flames.

 

YES stephen 87 iroc has the exact think I am looking for. Thank you iroc a 86 berli. I figure if I can get my car to look atleast something like that it has got to be better than what I got.

 

As for what to or not to do....

1. Use decent paint. Not that 99cent crap.
2. Make sure you prep the surface decent, and clean with good prepcleaner. Use finer sandpaper then normal, rattle paint doesnt hide the scratches/flaws as well.
3. Tape the areas you dont want painted off just as good as you normally would. Or even remove parts. (to paint or not paint)
4. Make sure you clear it, and dont try to fade the clear like you do paint. You gotta stop the clear on an good edge(body panel, trim, etc).
5. Do long even speed swipes. Not little short 2-3" jots.


The stripes on my car are rattle can, but the red is good paint. Its held up 1.5 years, so it should last an easy 2-3. Alot of spots on my gfx(mainly the nose) is all rattle paint because it keeps getting scuffed up.

Yeah I would kinda like to have the flat black look. Oh and if all goes well with the paint turning out decent I may go back and try to find a teal spray paint that is something like what my car has now and do some stripes down the car to kinda go with my emblems. I am going to post this on the photoshop request and see if someone can make a rough idea of what it would look like.

 

I just did this, this weekend also cannot afford paint for a bit so Flat spray bomb doesnt look too bad excuse the dirty as rims havent got to them yet.

also Make sure your doing it in a wind free enviroment or you will waste alot of paint. Masking is very important. The Hood I would take off the car and do it seperatly as its hard to get the paint to go on the right way it will be thick in spots and light in others. I would definetly have help because it is tiresome. No ninjas who dont know how to spray though man or youll want to stomp their faces.

DanTeix how much matierials did it take you to get the job done, and what all sanding and grit did you do. I was just going to take that website I was using as a refence and add aout 5 cans to the primer and paint but I would love to know some of the figures on it for an F body.

If I remeber right there are about 15 cans of flat black sitting in my back yard empty I plan on applying 10 more I had to stop because of rain. As for primer is does not have to be perfect it just has to give the paint somehting to stick to. I used 220 grit under the primer and 400 over the primer I have not sanded the the Flat black yet seeing as it started raining but I plan on 1500 to smooth it out nicley. A word of advice is take your time and you will get a good paint job out of a can. Sometimes others just dont understand when you cannot afford something so they bad mouth. Could even look better then maaco who knows.

Plus flat black does look mean as hell. Good Luck

dont rattle can it, waste of your money and time, prep it mask it and get a cheap gun, rent a compressor if you have to , and get SEM trim black from your local paint supplier and tell him your sprayin it out of a gun he will know what to get you, prep the car and wipe it down 2 times with prepsol, which is a wax and grease remover, then set up your stuff and spray out a test pannel so you can get used to spraying it, then start on the car, light coat for the first, then go pretty nice with the second and third, the car will look amaizing and the trim black is pretty tough, considering its what you see on most cars around window frames that are black and whatnot, i did this to two tone a subaru, it looks sweet and lasts, so please try to do this then rattle can, you will thank me later.

No you were not I may end up using more to get all the light areas out the more u use the more area will cover completly if you use only 15 cans it will look like **** guaranteed. Remember I am taking my time and trying to make it look as good as I can and there is no way it can be done in 15 cans good guesstimate Mathius.

haha ok you've got me hooked. How hard was it to get into the little creases and all? I am just really worried about having everything run on me. What kind of maintenance does this paint require and do you have some recent pictures of it to see how it looks after a while?

Rattle can flat black, crappy paint from walmart not even the good stuff, the 98c a can stuff is what I used. No clear coat, lots of sanding before hand some bondo/primer in spots. Another coat and some wet sanding it would have looked GREAT.

 

And another

Tape/cover EVERYTHING up that you dont want paint on.
Sand ALOT,then do a light coat of primer, Sand AGAIN.
Take your time spray the car from like 10-12 inches away with side to side strokes. And dont do it outside like I did cuz well it sucks.

If you can get inside get inside also recommend doing as many of the parts of the car as you can.

I just got to find a cheap wagner power painter now, I looked on the lowes website but didn't see any for $20. The cheapest I could find was like $60. I have one of those big Craftsman 7 or 10 inch buffer/polishers so I am set for that. I may have to hand sand everything so I will be calling around to see if anyone has a sander I can use lol. So I just need to get those things and go pick up the paint and sand paper. But its not suppose to get over 50 here any in the next few weeks so it looks like its going to be put off for a while atleast. I guess that will just have to get me more time to get ready for it and get supplies.

 

This is a VERY ROUGH idea of what I would like to have but I am not set in stone on the colors yet. The only reason I thought about this color scheme would be good coverage paint and I could reuse my emblems to match up with the stripes. Plus I have never seen teal stripes. Does it look good to yall? I don't know I kinda dig it as being different.

 

The alternative to Rustoleum if you don't want to have to do as many coats with the roller method is called Intelux Brightside. It provides better UV protection, more scratch resistant and is glossier than the standard Rustoleum Gloss.

Its definetly Different than the classic reds and whites. Do you think you would get sick of the teal after a while though? Also if your thinking of doing the wagoner Idea, i would definitely rattle can the stripes. Is that flat black?

what is your budget, im in rock hill maybe we can work something our for a paint job... real paint is not that expensive its the know how if how to use it all...... and once you go spray bomb on your car it double the prep costs cause the crap has to be removed 100% before more real paint can be put on it....

did that to my old RS didnt come out to bad I had to go to like 20 differnt stores to get enough spray cans though cause for some reason all the stores only carried one or 2 cans of the flat black

 

Have you checked out Summit?They have a urethane paint line!You can paint your car for about $300.According to my catalog...primer is $40 p/gal.Base is $80p/gal, activator(for clear and base) is $20 a qt.Clear coat is $60 p/gal, and reducer for $10 a qt.

This guy knows what he's talking about. His car turned out beautiful.

I recently did a complete color change on my car to white and I used implement paint from Tractor Supply...gloss white, $30/gallon + $13 for the hardener. 3 coats used maybe half of a gallon. I haven't wet sanded or buffed yet, but the car looks pretty damn good and the paint is very, very durable.

 

Well its looking as if I aint going to be able to do anything... Wachovia just hit me with a B.S. non suffecient funds charge that went in and messed up about 8 things I paid for just because my check didnt "actually" prosses untill a few days later, even though it always has. So needless to say I ended up paying around 200 dollars to get my account back into the good. HAHA so does anyone have any ideas to do paint even cheaper now?

I just watched "Trucks" this weekend, and they were talking about how they painted their Jeep Grand Cherokee. The paint came out awesome and they used actual PPG products. I didn't catch what paint line they used, but they said the paint itself cost less than $75 and they had enough left over for touch ups.

You could try looking at powerblock t.v.'s web page. I intend to look into it myself one of these days. Sounds awesome.

If done properly and carefully a rattle can job can turn out pretty good looking. There is no shame in painting your car that way. In fact as you have already seen, leaving a car in primer doesn't seal against rust. I am attaching a photo of my '79 Camaro. It is 100% rattle can. 14 cans of Rustoleum satin black, and 3 cans of Rustoleum satin white for the stripes. A majority of the sheet metal is bare under neath the Rustoleum paint. This car has been painted like this for nearly ten years (one complete redo almost three years ago, I am on a VERY tight budget), and I have never had any issue with rust forming. I always get compliments on the paint, even up close, and almost always receive shock when I tell people it is only off the Wal-Mart shelf spray paint. Good luck with yours!

I looked in to the roller method quite a few times but its so time consuming with having to wet sand so much. Plus I honestly think I would have more trouble doing it after hearing so many people talking about the roller leaving marks and extreme amounts of orange peel. I know if you did it enough times you would end up getting decent out it but by the time I figured out the right way for me to do it I would have a good enough job to get a regualar paint job.

 

Wow thats awsome fyrchkn. That color is some what simular to what I wanted on my car any way I will do this in a few weeks. Where is Bastrop? Never heard of it. Coarse then again thousands of towns in Texas I dont know about.
