I'm not really a 'bird guy, but I am wondering if anyone here watches The Office and can tell me what kind of Firebird Dwight drives. I did some searching and some people have said that it is a post 1987 GTA, but then they said that it had a factory 5.7 liter "big block"... They obviously don't know their engines, Lol. Last time I checked the L98 was an SBC! So, can anyone give me accurate information on what the car really is?

 

I have never seen the show but you spiked my curiousity so i did a little research. apears to be a regular trans-am?

If it's an original car, then it's a small block. They're idiots to think a 5.7L is a big block lol. The 350 is probably the most known small block there is lol.

 

I watch and love the show! It's an '87-'89 GTA I believe. It has 16" mesh wheels and it's one solid color. Trans Ams are two tone where the ground effects are the same color as the decals and such. Red w/ silver, black w/ gold, etc. If I've correctly identified the car then it prob has a 5.7l with an automatic. You could order a GTA with a 5spd but you had to get the less powerful 5.0l engine. Both TPI btw.

If anyone disagrees or has more to add, by all means.

*Edit* After looking looking at some interior pics I def believe it's a GTA as it has the digital dash and a pretty much loaded interior other than leather. Also, it's an automatic so it's a 5.7l.

it's a 1987 Pontiac Trans Am not a "GTA" i know that for a fact because the fenders have air dams and the GTA didn't have air dams (GTA Owner BTW) also it had the black spoked wheels the GTA's had the gold spoked wheels.

 

Its just a T/A - It has the fender vents and I don't see the GTA nose badge.

 

Does not have the power lumbar seats...no rear disc brakes, fender vents and no GTA steering wheel. 150% Trans Am.

I wouldn't be surprised if the "big block" reference was intentionally wrong (they do get the size right, yes?). It would be something Dwight would puff up to sound macho. I regularly hear similar in daily life.

 

Not to sure about the exact year of his bird.
But thought it was pretty funny that in the
first episode Dwight says he has a '78 270z.

 

It's just an 87' TA, has the 87' steering wheel in her. Almost 100% sure.

 

lol - great show. The actor who plays Dwight is a genius. I kinda like the association and that he owns the TA in the show - at first you cringe but he's a class A character and he grows on you after you watch a handful of episodes

Pretty sure it's a de-badged GTA.

 

Then whoever owns it would have had to take the time to get a different steering wheel or horn button, put in the fender vents, de-badge it (why would you do that to a GTA?), and put on ordinary black Trans Am wheels.

Was the auto-dimming mirror standard on the GTA? If so, his car doesn't have it.

 

Maybe it's his personal car, or they purchase from some whacko

 

It does not have GTA front seats in it, front fender vents, non-GTA steering wheel, no rear disc brakes and black cross lace wheels. So what it is is a repainted trans am, NON-GTA car.

 

My GTA does not have a GTA steering wheel. It was replaced with a regular Firebird one. I don't have an SPI label to prove it's a GTA, but everything is GTA-specific. I am probably going to spend the time to put fender vents on my car.

It also has a Firebird decal on the hood, and it's backwards. I can't ever tell if it's silver or gold as it's always from a video camera (4:2:0 chroma subsampling, colors bleed, low resolution), at a low angle, and always moving.

It's a shame how beat they let the car get towards the end of the series. It doesn't fit the character of Dwight, who is always overly dedicated to everything he does and has. I think the prop car used changes at some point, because the license plate number changes. Earlier on the car is glossy and nice, and then all of a sudden it has chipped and faded paint and a non-functioning and bent pop-up headlight.

Nope, it was just a Trans Am option.

its definitely a TA not a GTA
Digital dash could be had in 85-87 TAs and 88 GTAs as I was shopping for them then.I could be slightly wrong but I am sure they came on some TAs and WS6 was an option too.
