Very Big Hood Question
Very Big Hood Question
I need a hood for my 1985 Trans am and I thought I would go to my local junkyard and find one.
No '85 Trans Ams.
So I found a couple of different hoods and need to know if they would fit. Most would require a little cut out because I have the flip up lights.
I found an 89 TA hood, a 1985 Dodge Diplomat hood, 1984 Buick Electra or a 1983 Trans Am hood. There was also a 93 trans Am there but I dont think that the hood would fit. I could be wrong though.
The 83 would probably have the best fit, but along the top corners, both are broken at an angle. Its not huge, but I am not sure even if its possible to fix it.
No other cars there had quite the same long rectangular hood style that the TA uses.
Any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

Re: Very Big Hood Question
the 83 and 89 ta hoods are your only option. i dont know why u would even consider a dodge diplomat and buick electra! and the forth gen ta hood is way different.
Re: Very Big Hood Question
To do use those hoods I would have to make a cut out wouldn't I?
Does anybody happen to know the dimensions that I would have to cut or some diagram or something.
Also, the rubber/whatever it is attachment to the bottom of the hood is almost completely gone on both hoods. Is it needed, and if so, where can I get another one to attach to it?

Re: Very Big Hood Question
im not 100% sure i understand what it is you trying to acomplish. but if you trying to make a hood fit from an electra/diplomat ect, there isnt going to be a diagram or schematics. that will be u flying from the seat of your pants with a tape measure and a sawzall, and a very ugly looking hood.
if your going to use the ta hoods, and you have a TA why are you cutting anything?

Re: Very Big Hood Question
The trans am I have is the one with the flip up lights, while both of the other hoods don't have it.
Won't there be a space that is needed for the lights?
Or at least the ones I saw didn't have them.

Re: Very Big Hood Question
um, you must be looking at camaro hoods? iirc all firebird TA's and formulas have flip up head lights. do a search for camaro hoods on a firebird ect. i think i have seen multipul threads about hood swaps.
dude in this thread pulled it off, but he used the entire front end and no pop up head lights. no help to you i guess.

Re: Very Big Hood Question
you should put your location in your profile, it will be helpful when you ask questions like this. you are looking at camaro hoods, they wont fit. there are plenty of firebird hoods available. any firebood hood from 82-92 will fit. there are at least 4 different styles to choose from, as well as many aftermarket hoods. look a little further. there are plenty on the classifieds here and on ebay. good luck.

Re: Very Big Hood Question
If your trying to eliminate the flip up lights.....Camaro hoods will not fit Firebirds. No way, no how. Totally different profile, from the strut towers forward.
You can buy aftermarket Firebird hood without the headlight flip up notches, but then you'll hafta put in whole new headlights like Red Raif did hers, among other members.
