primer sealer
If i primered my car with a sandable filler primer, If I'm not going to get the chance to paint it for a little while, do I need to put a primer sealer on it? And if i do, when it comes time to paint it do I need to sand down through the sealer

Go to your local auto paint supplier, and ask them for a epoxy primer sealer called DP90. This stuff is great sprays a little thicker then regular primer but seals very well. If it sits for a time just run a scotch brite pad over it and then you can start shooting a regular sandable primer right over it. Good luck

fix and sand what u need to then wipe the whole car down with prep solvent and seal it.regular primer draws in moisture and will rust.

If you didnt go through to metal you should be OK. If you went through to metal anywhere....it will rust like the other guys have said and should be topcoated. I think its a laquer and is only meant to fill edges and minor imperfections not for protection. You could topcoat with paint or a sealer or epoxy....guess it depends on the budget.

do not use prep solvent to wipe that stuf if it doesnt wipe it right of it will smear it and will need to be sanded and re primed. i tried that stuff twice for a couple small dent fixes and the prep solvent smeared it bad, just wash the car with soap and water like a car wash and let it dry real good. the car should be washed anyways before u paint it, prep solvent is just in case theres any left over chemicals or silicones were used around the car that would cause phish eyes and such.

Oh man. That stuff is -JUNK-. heres the rub, that stuff absorbs moisture and oh heres the best part; some automotive paints are too strong and can lift it.
My suggestion is keep it dry...DO NOT go driving it through a car wash. Bucket wash it gently and then wipe it with some clean towels, then wipe it down with a TACK CLOTH right before painting.
Honestly, I would get a sealer that wont soften lacquer and enamel. since Im not sure which that crap is. Heres how I know its crap; there is no hardener involved with it, so its either uncatalyzed enamel or a lacquer base (which is duplicolor's shopline series). You definitely do NOT want lacquer thinner near that stuff...at all. MAYBE mineral spirits...maybe. Spray a piece of scrap with that stuff and let it sit, then wipe it gently with some 'odorless mineral spirits' and see if any of it comes off on the rag.
ME? Id sand it all off and seal the car with a urethane sealer, then shoot some 'high build' primer on that if you have any low spots; blocksand and paint

If the prep smears it Then painting over it will probably be bad.If U are going to use a rattle can primer over some bear metal spots I would only use SEM products they are very good and will work with about any paint system. Thread Starter

thanks for the input. I will probably put sealer on it and when it comes down to getting to paint I will probably start all over. THAT SUCKS!!!! Oh well live and learn right.
