prep wipes still coming out red after washing
before anyone says "try a search" i know i did , couldn't find my answer. i'm painting my 89 vert in my garage already pounded out an pulled and filled the dents. roughed up and /or removed the the factory clear and built a pretty good plastic booth in my garage. so i scrubbed down my car with some dishsoap as recomended by another post. when i pulled it back inside and started the final wipe with devilbis prep wipes to get started on the primer the wipes kept coming out red(the color of my car) so i scrubbed it down again using a little more aggressive sponge taking as much as 15-30 mins per panel and still i'm getting red prep wipes. someone please tell me what to do. can i prime a surface like this, is it normal, should i just burn it down what? the prep wipes have isopropyl alcohol as the main ingredient does this have somethin to do with it?

If you have sanded down past the clear to the base color, then it would be normal to get some color off when you wipe it. The wipe probably has a mild solvent in it and its taking a bit of the color with it. Should be fine but you might test a small area such as a headlight cover and make sure the paint isnt gonna lift.

Re: prep wipes still coming out red after washing
thanks guys. gave it another pass with wax remover and then the prep wites again. i shot it in primer and now i've got more issues. the primer only lays down nice and smooth on the corners and edges. on the large flat areas it looks like a layer of primer with specks of tiny primer ***** on top. i tried adjusting the fluid control and air pressure but that didn't change anything. do i need to change the mixture

What size tip are you using?
Did you strain the primer when you put it into the cup?
Are you using a water seperator/filter on the gun?
What type/brand primer are you using?

Re: prep wipes still coming out red after washing
it was pretty hot probably 100. i didnt have any reducer in there. i followed the mixing directions on the can and went 4 to 1 primer and catalyst. then today i found the tek sheet for the primer and it says to use up to 20% reducer... wish it said that on the can. could it have to do with water in the air. i noticed that my dessicant had gone completely pink after about 30 minutes.
the primer has adhered completely to the surface, there's just alot of the ***** on all the flat areas on top of the primer. it kinda feels like 80 grit sandpaper

Re: prep wipes still coming out red after washing
Water could have been the problem. The reducer would have helped it flow out better. Might have been a combination of both.
I would just block sand everything down which you were going to do anyway. If you have to reprimer, use some reducer and and a new filter. That should take care of your problem.
You could try a 1.6 tip if you have one also. Some primers a pretty thick.

It sounds to me that u need to reduce it.Sounds like the material is to thick.I am buy no means an expert but all the work I am doing is with expert advice and products.I had a similar problem when I first started spraying my primer.I went from a 4:1:1 to a 4:1:2 mix with my reducer.talk to a local autobody supply store they will set u up.

Re: prep wipes still coming out red after washing
Be sure to check your air cap on the gun. The little holes can get some stuff in them on the inside and that will make the (shear) pattern funny. This is pretty easy to hear for if you are a well seasoned painter. It sounds like the primer could need some reducing.
FWIW I use one of those plastic water traps attached to the gun when I paint in my garage. It looks really cheesey but has worked well for me for a couple of cars.HTH
