Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

Hey guys, so I am working on my 86 camaro, and this thing has some SERIOUS transmission trunk damage. I mean I have no earthly clue how this could have happened. It is beat in (or out) all over the place. Its totally smashed. Only a picture can describe it.

What can I do about that? I have a donor car that I can take the trunk from, but what is involved in welding this stuff? The metal is extremely thin and I have little welding practice. I can take it to a body shop, but what would that cost me?

Re: Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

either the trans exploded, or the car was wreched hard, and crumpled in the tunnel, then was pulled into shape and "fixed". What does the underside of the rest of the car look like?

Honestly i would find a different car, thats a real mess

The car is in perfect condition minus that. It was in a reported "Fender Bender" a while back. Cops said "minor" damage.

I would hate to get rid of this car. It is perfect in every way except that.

Was the frame damaged at all? Right under that seat rail is the subframe. It goes from the firewall to just beyond that rail. If the frame is not damaged you could cut out and weld in a piece from the donor car. I would definately have the frame looked at 1st though.

Re: Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

If the car was not smacked, throw down some carpet and be done. It really isnt that bad, looks like someone wanted to put some different seats in. I have a 78 Datsun 280z and I hsd to do that to my tranny tunnel to get nice seats in. Now I did a better job rhan that. You have to remember that 92 was the last year for this body style, God only knows what your car has been thru. Good luck and cover it up, and have fun with your car!!!!!!

Re: Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

Maybe the u joint failed and the drive shaft came loose, but I don't know if the drive shaft is that far forward. I'd say go to a shop and have them check and make sure the frame is strait. If it is, get some subframe connectors, just in case. And be done with it. If it's no horribly noticeable with carpet over it I think you should be fine.

thats the first thing i thought when i saw the picture. look underneath the car in that area and see if the damage is just behind the trans.

Re: Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

I did some further inspecting and I found a BUNCH of stuff bent. The car is beyond repair, I am sure it is crab-walking. Looks like this thing took a jump at 90mph and SMACKED down on the left front wheel and then someone "fixed" it. All kinds of sheet metal is bent. I quit working on this car, now I am working on a 92 RS and using this thing for parts

Re: Transmission Trunk damage... odd *picture*

its a shame, but sometimes you just have to walk away from a car like that.

Use it for parts, then part out the rest, and scrap the body and make a couple bux
