Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

If you want a proper finish sand with 320-400 all by hand. Do the flat areas with a block sander. Palm sanders ,etc are for quick jobs and can leave nasty flaws personal preference really. Painting is not all that hard you can get really good results. Way back when I was looking at doing paint myself I found this site. His video is pretty good and worth the few bucks to download it. Some very good tips and even does a very nice finish in a carport check out the sample vid.

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

you want it to turn into a firebird?

sorry, couldn't help myself

ifor a total paint job, it really depends on what tooks you have at your disposal. Do you have a good compressor? a paint gun? were you planning on doing the whole job with rattle cans?

I've done both, give us some more details and I'll help you out

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

400 would be better... I've seen surface scratches through paint with 220

sounds like you could get away with a single stage enamel. try TCPglobal for prices, they also sell through ebay

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

here's my car... I can paint with a gun, but I did this with rattle cans. I'm going to re-do it when I finish my impala restoration, and can take more time

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

gotcha.... i hear the passenger fender is tricky because of the antenna. A GM service manual would probably be worth it's weight in gold to you

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

i actually did my s10 with 180. i'm planning on painting my Z. i'm going to d/a with 180. then cover the car in filler primer, then block with 180, then block again with something finer.

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

dude.... i work in a paint shop... and if you can, trust me.... you want to buy or find someone with a dual action sander. it will make it so much easier. plus, you want to start getting paint of with 80 grit, then 100, and work your way finer until there is fine tooth for paint to stick to.

I really don't intend on hijacking this thread but I am curious as to why you'd want to leave the GFX on when painting? I can understand the fenders but wouldn't it make a cleaner job if the GFX were removed, painted then replaced?

As I have been told time and time again -it's in the prep work! Every little imperfection will show through when you paint so get the body smooth and flawless before you start applying the base coat...

Re: Budget Paintjob...Tips???

I was talking about the fenders, and to some extent the bumpers. I'm relaly not sure how easy the ground effects are to take off, but I've seen great paint jobs with them left on, so I know it's possible

Ah! That makes sense - I agree with the statement that unless you're doing a FULL restoration there is no need to go through all of that. As far as the GFX I could see it going both ways - personally when I do mine I will be removing them to give it a clean/solid look.

There are some great resources available for body work - the site mentioned earlier is one and definitely look at some books on the topic as well. Haynes has a good one available...
