ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
The EPA has had a law out since 2007, in which, that you MUST be a certified painter if you do auto collision COMMERCIALLY, or if you are a hobbyist who paints over 2 cars per year. some of you may already know this, but it is really coming into effect as of january 2011. EPA requires you to get this little certificate to be legal. you can get this taken care of no problem its just a simple little test and class that shows you how to take apart and put your gun back together, and how to reduce overspray. You MUST spray with HVLP guns, or RP guns and have documentation that they are infact true HVLP/RP guns. I found this website with more information concerning the matter, but its nice to take anyways for those who would like tips on painting that are just beginning, and most importantly to be smarter about how to spray. anybody who is experienced in painting I assure you that your not learning anything new here (most likely)

Good thing I paint a car maybe every 3-4 years lol Shooting to paint one this year. If I run into any roadblocks, I have a couple of body shop buddies.

Yes it is called being 6h certified to shoot any type of paint. I am 6H certified to shoot martin Senour paints and did so through my old high school. It really isn't that hard of a test but it just goes over different ways of doing things to be eco friendly.

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
If your spray painting at home I'd atleast try and make an effort in making some sort of ventilation system, but you should be fine spraying at home, and if anybody asks just tell them that you only paint no more than 2 cars a year( that doesn't mean that you should paint everybody and their brothers car). If anybody has any questions over the matter I can help ya out. I also went thru my vo-tec school to get certified and it was free.

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
EPA may say it's alright to spray at home but I'll bet the fire marshall has something else to say about it. Depending weather you are in the city or county
I was told in the training class that the reason the EPA was not regulating aerosol cans was that would include hair spray. They didn't want to get the women upset. Can you imagine banning hairspray at work then coming home to your wife!
3 ounces is all you can spray in shop outside of booth according to EPA. But they don't tell you how many times you can fill up your 3 ounce cup. There are certain ingredients in paints they are fussing about. Spies has none of these in their primer, so I've been told.

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
3 ounces and must be in a prep station or have atleast 3 walls.
I'm not sure what kind of cups you guys use but I use metal, not a fan of the plastic throw-aways, but you must not only spray 3 ounces when your outside of the booth, it has to be in a 3 ounce cup.. Stupid. But typically whenever I spray outside the booth I don't even come close to spraying over 3 ounces.
If I plan on spraying a lot I'll bring it in the booth just to keep the over spray off of everything else.. Oh ofcourse and for my dear mother nature

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
Way back in the late 80's a couple guys from the EPA came into the shop to inspect. I asked one of the guys "what is a VOC". His answer was "Volitile Organic Compound". I told him "NO S**T! I want to know what a volitile organic compound is". He needed to open up his book and look. The definition read "ANYTHING containing one atom of CARBON".
I told him that means animal and plant life is bad for the Earth because we are carbon based, left him speechless!
Tax dollars at work. More to the government and less to education.

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
Your partially right, but not so much. This is what wiki has to say to help clear that up
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) refers to organic chemical compounds which have significant vapor pressures and which can affect the environment and human health. VOCs are numerous, varied, and ubiquitous. Although VOCs include both man-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds, it is the anthropogenic VOCs that are regulated, especially for indoors where concentrations can be highest. VOCs are typically not acutely toxic but have chronic effects. Because the concentrations are usually low and the symptoms slow to develop, analysis of VOCs and their effects is a demanding area.

At that time the only thing the guy from the EPA had to define VOC was "anything conatining one atom of carbon".
So my going by the EPA's deffinition that was given to me I asked myself "what would contain carbon".

Re: ATTENTION AUTO PAINTERS/HOBBYIST
But in the late 80s there was no big laws on VOCs to make it that big of a deal, but what it said in the wikipedia definition is that yes everything has carbon in it, but it's that specific type of carbon that they are regulating. If this were the case they would of already made a law on how many times you can exhale per day lol

And no, back then they did not make us keep track of how much we purchased and how many VOC's we sprayed and did not force us to use HVLP.
But on occasion they did come out to inspect. Just to justify their phoney bolony jobs.

After doing it for over 25 years I learned to just do what you do until a suit walks up and tells you that you now have to do it this way.

This was late 80's California. Does that explain it enough???

Your right about that though but for people just trying to get a job in the field I think it's going to have to be a "must have" before too long to be certified.. Especially in Texas or California

I don't understand I word you just said, but go ahead and get hit with thousands of dollars worth of fines. Exactly what type of paint do you use that has NO VOC's ? Your an idiot.
