1 Month Paint job

Well I decided to paint the car as the paint on it was 1 stage and it was starting to get chalky and terrible looking... (no I did not spray the 1 stage on, I would never use 1 stage on a car) haha Anyways I used a new to me site called paintforcars.com. $200 shipped to my door, gallon of paint and clear and all the reducer/activator I need. They have a limited selection of paints but i chose a non-metallic candy apple red.(it was as close the the color on the car i could get) I did all the bodywork myself and it's not perfect but as my friend says "It's a driver" so it doesn't need to be perfect in my book. I just wanted her to look good for a few years or until I can get the time to set her aside for a while and paint her completely and do more with taking panels off to remove rust under the pieces I didn't remove. But for now it's ok. Here's some pictures. (The last picture isn't completed as I ordered a new nose emblem and decals but I haven't received them yet. I also need to repaint the headlight pockets as I sprayed primer in them without thinking, haha. Well what do you guys think? (the pictures don't do the color justice) I'll add more pics when I get the parts on the car.

Are you going to color-sand and buff? Props to you, for painting your own.

Is that a gravel floor with a piece of carpet on it? LOL! Sounds like something we'd have going around here...

Looks good to me, man. If you took like 25-30 hours of your life and wet-sanded and buffed you would be amazed. You'd turn that DD into a show quality car! Very good work!

Looks like it turned out sweet! Nice deep red color. Around these parts, that license plate would attract every teenager that thinks his Honduh is fast. They'd be revving thier engine at you at every stoplight...

Re: 1 Month Paint job

Good job. Deffinately want to wet sand and buff it. Make it look even smoother. I almost wanna say I see sand marks through the paint. I would have sanded before I sprayed the clear too. But for a daily driver..very nice and if my daily driver had a paint job on it like that i'd be one happy guy!

Re: 1 Month Paint job

I didn't want to go crazy as I would like to drive it this year haha. I will eventually wet sand it but not right away. I have too much going on. I feel it looks great as a DD. I would have taken much more time into the car if I wanted a show quality finish. And you probably can see sand marks in certain places, haha. It was a quick job to get rid of the old 1 stage paint the PO painted her with... I'm happy for now. I'll get more pics as the parts arrive and I'll make sure to get some nice shots when the weather warms up around here. Yes it's stone with carpet over it, been that way for over 20 years, haha. The garage I use (where the Vette is) is concrete and insulated and relatively clean. I would have painted there but I didn't have the room. My dad has 2 trucks in there and his old 83' MKII Supra and I have the vette, tons of parts, 3 engines and snowmobiles. There was not enough room. I have too much stuff! haha.

I used the color Candy Apple Red non-metallic, using the Starfire clear coat.

http://www.paintforcars.com/kits_sta...dyaplered.html

That's the exact kit I used. I'm kinda wishing I went Metallic now but what the hell I figured I would give this cheap paint a shot! WE'll see how she holds up this summer and for the next few years... Hopefully good! haha

Re: 1 Month Paint job

I'll be priming my 89 tomorrow and then ordering the SINGLE STAGE arctic white urethane from paintforcars.com.

So, we'll be able to see what a couple coats of single stage looks like.

I'm using an HVLP turbine to spray

Single stage looks good but it doesn't have the depth that a 2 stage has... But with white you can't really get much depth even on a 2 stage so i'll bet a 1 stage will look pretty good. Single stage needs to be redone more often from what I have seen too. Post up your results.

Re: 1 Month Paint job

I think with single stage, you can throw some clear in with your last coat to give it a more glossy look right? I dunno. My charger sat for 5 years a nice wet sand and that paint was back to looking awesome. it was single stage.

Anything is better than what it was when I bought it. I'm not looking to emulate a $4,000 paint job. 2 rounds with primer and then another 2 full rounds with single stage and she'll be looking pretty enough to sell.

The outside will match the complete new power train/suspension/interior.

So, the 89 will emerge looking young and fresh on the outside for about a whopping $200 when you add in primer and other supplies.

And yes, you can put clear over urethane but I'm not sure about lacquer if you use that and can clear it.

Here's a few more pics... I brought her home today. So at least I can work on her a lot easier as I only have to walk about 50 feet to the shop. haha

Looks just as good out in the daylight. Get those wheels polished (see my thread here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/auto...g-buffing.html) and you will have a super-sweet ride!

I repainted the wheels last year but they get so dirty so fast, I'm gonna check out that link you posted. Now I just need to get my rocker/bumper emblems, door decals and the IROC lower stripes and I'll be in business!

I have a lot of extra clear coat left over so I might clean the wheels up nice then clear them to make keeping them clean easier. Anyone have anything negative to say about using clearcoat on wheels?

Re: 1 Month Paint job

Anyone have any idea how to clear the aluminum after I polished it? I was thinking of using brake cleaner or maybe just a degreaser to remove the polish residue completely so the clear will stick. Any ideas?

I would use some sort of degreaser. then soap and water. let it dry and spray one. see how it comes out.

I see you painted in your garage. Is it heated or just outside temp. I ask because I want to paint my car but mine is unheated and I don't know if it is warm enough yet

I got all my bodywork done when it was cold and then i just happened to get lucky and the temps went to like 60+ for a couple days and I sprayed it then... I would have preferred like 70+ degrees but I'm kinda stuck. I have a salamander at my shop but the garage the car was in didn't have a heater and the place isn't insulated. (Yes it was VERY COLD at times) haha I want more 60+ degree days!!! I'm sick of winter!

But what's with the rear wheels? Do you have spacers with those stock wheels?

Hey, hey, whats so bad about orange now?? LOL....paint job looks great! I was considering doing mine myself but the guy that did it gave me such a good deal and did an amazing job that I'm glad I went that route instead. After all, with mine I am going for more of a "show car" approach. I am really thinking about painting my little 1990 honda civic just for a practice job though since the clearcoat on it is half gone and it looks like it's 2 tone!

Very nice! That paint job turned out very nice! And cheap to boot, what better combination could there be?

Re: 1 Month Paint job

Did you have enough paint left over to do an engine bay also? I'm thinking about getting a kit from the same place but I plan on doing the engine bay the same color.

Yea I have more than enough left over but I didn't bother with the engine bay as for one I don't want to clear it (Then i'll have to clean it 24/7) and second the engine bay is the same color as the car and it looks just fine..

Re: 1 Month Paint job

So you had left overs of the paint and the clear? I just wanted to know if there was enough. Looks good! Why did you decide to keep the fenders, gfx etc on? Won't it flex and crack eventually? I plan to remove anything I can except the doors when I paint the car. Did you use primer? Using one of these kits too!

It's either getting the Super jet black or Black metallic kit.

Re: 1 Month Paint job

awesome paint job, was looking into getting the candy apple red kit from them for my car but wasnt sure what kind of tint thered be to it, now seeing your pics it looks like the original color of mine which is what i want, as for the person asking if there was enough paint left over, i recently did a car for a friend(with a different brand of paint) and i bought a gallon which is what comes with the kit and after doing 3 coats i still had a half gallon or more left so im sure youd have enough paint to do 2 cars if you wanted

Re: 1 Month Paint job

Very nice, great job.The only thing I would change is those "Crystal"turn signal/parking lights with stock looking ones and using the clear bulbs. Sorry but they just look out of place on a basically stock looking car .I would sell the ones you have and replace them with these. Those with the Sylvania Silverstar headlights and your set.
