HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

hey guys, i could really use a hand with my problem. ok, so my passenger side door started dropping when i open it, so my dad decided to replace the hinge pins, nbd right? WRONG! its the upper thats gone. we took the door completely off after buying an upper hinge pin from napa, and after the old pins were removed, discovered not only is the pin i bought NOT an upper, its not even long enough to get through the hinge. no one seems to carry the 2 piece pin kit, my car is doorless, my door is pinless, and its the only car i have on the road right now and i have to be somehere tomorrow evening. im biking to the dealership tomorrow, will they be able to get the pins and bushings for me?

Google - Top Down Solutions. They sell the upper hinge pin kits to repair 3rd gen doors. Be prepared they are not cheap, but then again thats the story for most parts for our cars...

It's a pain but you could put the old one back for now. Unless you destroyed it taking it out. Sometimes you just can't make it happen.

Re: HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

the old ones are absolute garbage. theres no way they can go back in, theres no way i can get the parts online as the postal service here is on strike. after i cool off from biking all over town (im from out of town), im gonna go weld the door back on and go dukes of hazzard style until the winter then figure out what to do.

Re: HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

Whoever delivered the parts to you (UPS?) must have dropped it off, and not charged you for the duties. Lon should have written on the form that the receiver is billed the export duty, instead of the sender. Now he's stuck with the bill. That's a UPS or Lon screwup, but ultimately your bill. Whatever you do, don't screw Lon out of the $44. That's exactly the reason why so few companies even want to deal with us shifty Canucks $22 for shipping only sounds right, $44 is right for duty. Small value parts we get raped on, especially when using UPS/DHL/FEDEX. They have a $15 minimum fee, then the actual tax, then the xyz fee, and the doohickey fee, etc etc. It's criminal what they charge, but the alternative is to use the postal service (and you know how that is now...), but normally that just adds a *bit* more time to the delivery, but lessens the fee considerably.
Or you just get it shipped to a delivery service south of the border, and drive over and pick it up... Depending on how close you are to the border.

PS - Did your dad just bolt the door on for now? ie, bolts instead of pins?

Re: HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

i allowed the charges, i just wont eat for the week i guess.

he had some bearing like bushing things hanging around in the shop that he put in and drilled them out and put a put and bolt and nut through it. thank god for a garage full of crap. instead of the door falling when i open it now, it lifts up lol. the striker pulls it down even after its been adjusted

i had a guy tell me that he changed upper and lower pins/bushings with the doors closed and he did it through the inner fender (removed inner fenders) without removing the doors,,is this method possible?

I like the idea and would also like to know. Would it make it easier? I did one with the door open on the car and that is a royal PITA I need to do both doors and am not looking forward to it

Re: HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

while you guys are at it take a look at the seam sealer around the hinges where they are welded on the door......pry it off and see if you notice any rust.......I just did mine and found some around one of the lower hinges.

Re: HELP!!!!! upper hinge pin replacement gone wrong!!

Hawks third gen has similar replacment pins. I just got a set of these that appears stronger than the ones at TDS, and Hawks.

I looked at the sellers history and it seems he's sold quite a few of these. 40 bucks is cheap. Well considering it looks like 10 bucks in parts, the person is making a ton on these. Apparently the people that bought them are happy with the results.
