wierd switch

my 91 camaro rs has a wierd metal switch in the center console or glove box. when u push it up it automatically comes back down. what can this be?

Transmission: SMOOOOOOTH T-56/Auto. . .

Axle/Gears: 3.42 and 2.73

do you have the electric hatch motor?
it could be a jerry-rigged version of that...
based on the location anyway...
