Drivers side mirror replacement question

The drivers mirror on my 84 camaro has a single crack right down the middle of it. I have a replacement one I got from Top down solutions, and it has a few pieces of adhesive tape to use when installing. They suggest placing the new mirror directly over the older mirror. I put the mirror in place to get an idea of how it would look and I find that it is noticeable and really catches my I and not in a good way..looks out of place. So here is my question, How do I remove the original mirror without destroying everything in the process? The mirror has a crack but there are no pieces missing from it. Please advise.
Thanks in advance

Re: Drivers side mirror replacement question

If its a remote control mirror your SOL to just change the mirror
as the control wires hook directly into the glass and can't be removed
easily.

Thats why the stick on replacement mirror.................

The mirror is held in the housing by three screws . I bought one on ebay and put it in my housing . Good Luck .

Re: Drivers side mirror replacement question

I did a replacement on the passenger's side on my car, I was in the same situation as you. The instructions said to use a hammer and just bust out what was left of the mirror. I stuck duct tape all over mine to catch the slivers and knocked it out. Mine is power and it did not affect the motor.

Re: Drivers side mirror replacement question

Just to see what may be available as a piece to put on the cracked mirror call a auto/glass place/places and see if they have a better alternative to the the one you have now. As mentioned if its the wire controlled unit the whole thing including the wiring may need to be replaced. It comes as kind of a unit all together. From the look of the car in your signature it looks like nice paint. Complicates things a bit with the complete replacement unless its stock and you're lucky enough to find one that color.

the original mirror glass was stuck on to the plastic backing with a silicone like material. you can pry the broken glass off the backing easily(DO wear protection!!) remove the remaining "glue?" from the backing .I used some silicone gasket maker to attach the new glass to the backing. it looks as if it were never broken!! be easy and good luck

Re: Drivers side mirror replacement question

If you pop the plastic backing plate back onto the cross-bar that connects it to the mirror motor before replacing the mirror glass you'll prevent the risk of breaking the new mirror glass when trying to get it onto the motor. If you've already replaced the glass (as shown in the video) then use a towel or piece of cardboard over the mirror glass to prevent cutting your hand in case the glass breaks as you are attempting installation.
