Speedometer grinding?

Noticed loud noise from speedo on the way to work this a.m. and the needle started jumping erratically. Reset trip meter and the noise stopped and needle ok. Then it started grinding again. It sounds like the gearing inside the speedo is self-destructing.

I want to disconnect the speedo cable behind the gauge until I have time to look at it. What's the easiest/quickest way to get to it? Do I have to pull the entire cluster out? Any special tools needed?

Thanks in advance.

It might just need to be lubed up.

Will try the lube first-maybe the cold weather is causing it to bind.

Thanks again.
