This is Macewen's site. I have these overlays and I have nothing bad to say about them. Check out my site too, if you have a chance. You'll enjoy it! Send me some pictures of your car too!

This is probably a really dumb question, but aren't Firebird gauges back lit? Like the light glows through the numbers? Yeah, so how would the light shine through a piece of white paperboard? Just curious...

The firebird gauges are not backlit. The bulbs are behind the gauges, but the light reflects off of the black stamped steel trim ring that is in front of the gauges.

just put these gauges in my turbo transam. They went in under 30 minutes even with the uncut version(you need to calabrate two needles that took about a minute)

The overlay has small windows that line up with the lighted areas on our guages (90-92). That was the only hard part - lining up the gauges.

Like I said, I love mine.

Firebirds had backlit gauges starting in 86'. There are holes for the numbers cut in the overlays so the light shines through.

My 86 firebird DID NOT have backlit gauges, and to my knowledge, the gauges did not change until 90, just like the Camaros. The lights are technically behind the gauges, but the gauges are solid and permit NO light to shine THROUGH the gauge. The light reflects off of the metal trim that mounts in front of the gauges, therefore illuminating them from the FRONT.

On my 88 GTA they are backlit. There is this clear piece of plastic behind the lights that acts like a fiber optic. The bulbs have those little tiny condoms over them to make them orange... hehe. I also took apart an 86 TA dash and it was the same thing.
