KEYS A,B,C,D,E ???
KEYS A,B,C,D,E ???
I am trying to get a spare set of keys cut here in the UK and not having much luck.
No locksmiths keep the blanks but an american parts supplier does but he needs to know if it is an A,B,C,D,E blank. It is too long a journey to visit him. He says this letter is stamped on the key but it is not on my ignition key but is on the key for the doors and is a 'D'. The ignition and fuel cap keys are different blanks.
Please can anyone with a car manufactured in 1988 tell me the letters printed on your 3 keys and the month of manufacture of you vehicle mine is 11th July 1988.
I dont think this will compromise your security but do not list any numbers on the keys, if there are any.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have an '86 and I don't know if the key type would have changed within those two years (I doubt it) and my ignition key is "A" and the door/trunk key is "B". Hope this helps.

Each year they change from one set of blanks to another. They use the same blanks across the whole GM product line in a given year. An 83 is A ign & B doors; 84 is C-D; 85 E-F; etc. J-K is as far as they go, then they start over. Your car was actually almost certainly built as an 89 with a production date that late, so it will have C-D blanks, unless somebody has replaced the ignition cylinder; nearly all of the replacement those are As.
In any case only one of them will even go into the lock. All you have to do is take one of each blank and try it; the one that fits is the right one. Too complicated for a locksmith I guess.

Thanks for the replies so far. If keys are grouped AB,CD etc then as my door key is a D it would suggest that the ignition is a C although this does not match 'SGT SWEETPANTS' reply. But only his year does not match not the pattern of AB, CD ....
I'll wait to see if I get any more replies but C and D blanks look favourite at the moment.

Do you mean calendar year or model year? My 84 has A & B keys.

Hey man, ive worked at a hardware store for 3 years and have been making keys since i started there.
If ur door key is "d" then ur ignition is "c".but, if it has the "vats" chip on the key u have to go to a gm dealer to get that made.
