Re: need advice on paint job

Eight grand is a lot of money, but paint quotes are based on the amount of work they will have to do. Without seeing your car or at minimum having a general idea as to how much work is necessary to prep it for paint, $8k may be too much or it can be a bargain.

Things like rust, old/bad previous body work, welding, and on and on, can make one job cost $2500 and the next double, triple or quadruple that amount for the same type of vehicle.

Re: need advice on paint job

Paint jobs can cost anywhere from 500$ and up with really no cap. I have seen some really nice stuff pumped out for 10K.

If they are giving you a quote of 8K, you better get a report from them. Labor hours, type, brand, and how much paint as well as what kind of fillers, primers, and glaze. Lots of shops will try to pump out an high price tag and use production or medium grade product to get by with a larger profit. For 8K they better be using quality.

Re: need advice on paint job

BTW blackbmagic, glad I read your post about repainting your car. That's what sold me on having the marker lights shaved. Glad I got those things removed. I kept the door handles though - haha. Also shaved the antenna. Always disliked where it was located.

BTW, the shop that painted my car charged me an additional $150 to shave the marker lights, so things like that will make the price of a paint job higher.

And, sac92transam, I'd get quotes from other shops to compare prices.

Re: need advice on paint job

8k is high for a repaint of general purpose, like said above get a detailed breakdown of labor, and what product line they will use. Are you having all your jambs done and under the hood? will they be pulling the motor and interior? lots of unknown variables here. If they are tearing into this car than 8K will be a good price with top of the line Dupont or PPG, if they will use a sub-line like say Omni, and only do a respray you will be getting hosed.

Re: need advice on paint job

One thing that i would recommend is to look for a local guy not working for a shop that knows what he is doing. You can often find people who do decent paint and body work for a lot cheaper, while still having the same quality as the 8k paint job. Although this is risky due to the fact that it is not a professional company, and you could get ripped off, if you find the right guy and have heard good things about him, you can get a cheaper paint job. My body is in 2 times worse condition than yours...The A pillar on my car has a hole rusted right through the top part of it, and the front bumper is cracked in one spot pretty bad. The guy doing my body work is only charging $1600...Granted he has had the car for a lot longer than a professional shop would have taken to do it, i am getting it for $6,000 cheaper. Be sure to do what black magic says and get receipts. What color are you painting it?

Re: need advice on paint job

OK,
I did send this as a PM to the OP becouse I was not sure about putting it in this thread. I have posted this link so many times over the last 5 years I figurd your tired of seeing it. I changed my mind so here it is .
One of the reasons a complete proper/professionally done/base/clear paint job can cost so much is because there's really no money in it. They have to charge big bucks because it takes up "allot" of there time. Most shops make there money with insurance work. Slam, bang, there done and they knock them out fairly fast. Before my friend stepped in and took on my paint job ,I looked around and one quot was $5,000.00 and they would only work on it when it was slow.. My car is my DD and there is no way I could leave it for that long. The other shops I went to were not interested.
My friend Mike is a "PROFESSIONAL" auto.painter that was working at a high end body shop for a few months before opening his own shop out of state.Anyway here's what I had done for $3,000.00
This is at the very least what you should expect for between $5,000.00 to $6,000.00.
As you can see he did not need to take it to bare metal in most spots. These photos are only part of the process.

That statement is absolutely correct, and the guys at the shop where I had my car painted were kind enough to explain that to me, pretty much using the same language - LOL.

Well time is money when you are in business, labor is expensive along with all the utilities, mortgage, product and equipment. The average monthly nut for a small shop can be 10 - 15 K just to open the doors, no one is in business to break even.
