Primer
Primer
Does it matter if there are streaks in primer? Does is mean you nead more primer on?
I'm fixing the rust on my car and was planning on getting a autobody place to do the actual paint job.
I have a newer bumper cover too that I wanna use and it's red. The new paint is going to be dark blue. If I prep that myself can I just scuff it up with 400 grit and prime it?. Or is there a trick I should know about.
Thanks

I'm doing it all my self, fixing all dents, drilling holes to put on my ground fx,wrap around spoiler, which were a real PITA,and 87 IROC nose, then primer and paint, the car gonna be gloss black with two silver racing stripes. Those streaks in the primer are called runs,to get rid of it you need to sand them out and then spray some more primer over the spots that had runs in it.If you have a garage to do this in try it if not your screwed cause when you paint dirt, bugs, and all other crap could get onto the car while the paint dries that would ruin all the hard work you put into it.If it comes to that then you gotta spend money to have somebody do it.BTW before you go and try to do this on your car you should practice on a messed up fender or something from the junk yards.

Im doing computer science but I wish I wasnt, if I had the choice id go off to UTI and do performance car training etc
Also I just bought some primer from Wallmart and Ill try it out and see how it works. Maybe a before and after pic if im not too lazy. I got some cheap spraypaint to cover it also. And I also got the shinyest wax I could find to make it look better lol.
Ill let you know how my $10 rust repair goes.

Well I did the entire driver door under the trim strip in about 30-35 minutes lol.
I took the meanest looking rasp I could find to the rust and sanded the rest with 400 grit sand paper.
The areas where there was rust sticks out (well in rather) a little, so I think Ill go buy some bodyfiller and touch them areas up and try again.
Still, for 10 bucks it dont look half bad.

I had to jump in on this after someone said UTI. My brother has worked in a machine shop and our family has been in the car business for 30 some years so we've seen quite a few guys come out of UTI. Don't go to UTI, if it's in an infomercial it probably doesn't work. We have a joke around here: you know what UTI stand for? Un-Trainded Idiot. All they teach you how to do is work on one kind of car. No science or cross training. Just how to pull codes and work diagnostic equipment. Sorry I had to put that in.
I'll put in something useful while I'm here. If you want a real nice paint job where the color seems to jump off the car, use the final coat pigment in the primer. Also there is spot filler primer and prep primer. There is a difference, and if you use body filler, you have to use both. OK, now I feel better about that UTI thing.

well UTI wasnt the only choice I just wanted some place to get the know-how etc. And Jay that was the same reason I didnt go, dads first responce was 'h3ll no' etc etc. Wherebouts in stafford are you anyways? If your near rt17 my cars up at Carpenters Garage behind the Pizza hut right now.
Whats this about different primers? I dont know which I ended up buying but where I used it and actually had the surface smooth, and painted over white it looks better than any other part of the car.
I dug up a sanding disk in the basement so I can get even more agressive with the rust when my cars back.
When I get it right ill post a pic before and after. And Ill let ya know how long whichever way works took. Im aiming to keep say half a door panel under 45m-1hr from start to finish. Im impatient i know i know. That and I work stupidly fast at everything I do
Gotta go pick up more paint, one can did from the middle of the door to the back of the car under the trim strip. Well roughly anyways, the trim around the wheel and I didnt get along so its not there anymore

Right now I live in my parents house. Its up near rt. 610, in the subdivision called aquia harbor. My car is sitting in the driveway with no hood, fender, or nose on it..haha. Man I learned today I seriously HATE doing body work on cars..heh.
Either tomorrow or sunday I'm moving back to blacksburg though.

Whats gonna be happening with the car then? Will it just sit? Last i was up there you had to have a pass or something to get in there, do they still have the gate and all? If not Ill be roaming looking for parts.. LOL j/k
And yea doing the bodywork on my car has made me realise im not going to be doing this any more than I have to. To much work for so little.
Oh, and the sander idea didnt work, I couldnt stop it from gouging the metal when it paused momentarily. Need more filler :-)

The car goes with me to blacksburg. I finished all the body crap so its ready to roll. The only parts you'll find laying around is the damaged crap I took off..heh.
Yeah, you still need a pass to get in aquia. And they still have their own private rent-a-cop police force..heh.
If you have an air compressor you should look into getting a feather sander to use on your car. It makes sanding out rust spots pretty simple and much less time consuming.
