Pulling spedo out from dash to replace white lights with blue???

How the hell do you get the spedo out??? I know the cable is connected to the rear which I have unhooked but I can't see any thing else to release it :-( and how am I supposed to get ahold of the lights that are in the corners :-(. I just cant grasp them. Also I have the 85mph spedo and was wondering If I took one out of a z or Iroc If it would function alright or would it be off?? By the way Its a 87 camaro since they changed gauge layout in what 89-92

you need to pull off your dash pad and reach back behind the gauge cluster, there is a clip hooked on to the rear of the speedo drive

<FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Tahoma"><font color="#000000"><font size=2>Michael....I just finished what you're in the middle of now. The best way to unrelease the cluster is from underneath the dash. After you undo all of the screws (don't forget the 2 where your service lights are) the only thing holding the cluster in is the speedo cable. You need to take a long screw-driver and press down on the clip that's holding it. I hope you have better luck with your lights, I tried out the new lights last night for the first time last night and blew 10 out of the 12! ( Repeat as necessary....lol)

where did you buy your lights from? I kinda went from place to place. Pair at pepboys pair at auto zone 3 pairs at orileys haha. I heard one guy just used model paint to paint his??? That possible with the heat and all and what color blue would you want to use to make it bright enough but not real bright???? Because the damn lights at pepboys are brighter then the other 8 lights :-( So it lookes fu/*ed. I figured I'd take the blue lights back and just paint my original ones haha.

I found that it's easiest to unhook the speedo cable by hand. I had to actually feel the clip to figure out what to do. Poking around with a screwdriver didn't get me very far. When I contorted myself just right (My head was mashed against the gas pedal) I was able to reach my arm up around the fuse panel (I think I unscrewed it so it would swing down) and reach all the way to the clip on the back of the speedo. I wrapped my other hand around and pulled on the gauge cluster as I pressed the clip and everything slid right out.

Once the gauge cluster is out, you can turn it over and you'll see a bunch of round green plugs. Turn them 1/4 turn and pull them out. Those are the bulb sockets. It's a piece of cake once you've got the gauges out.

what a bunch of silly nillies, look just pull on the freaking cluster really hard, thats what i did, it came out far enough all i did was reach behind while seating in my seat and unplug it. Just give it a little tug, no need for the "HARD WAY"

Yeah, nothing like just cranking on something until it moves.

That speedo isn't exactly made out of titanium. I think I'll play it safe and do it the right way. That speedo cable is only so long, and if you crank on it you're going to destroy the speedo or you're going to mess it up at the transmission.

Oh, one more thing. I discovered a few years ago that it doesn't take long for the heat from those blue bulbs to change the blue tint to some nasty greenish brown color.

<FONT SIZE=2 FACE="Tahoma"><font color="#000000"><font size=2>Hi 86 IROC. Hmmmm, the first thing I would check is make sure that you have the cluster fully plugged in. When I was testing mine before screwing it down, my tach would die from time to time. Did you take off the needle? ALSO: has anyone else changed their bulbs and what were the results? The bulbs that blew were Xenon Blue and they weren't very bright. I'm considering going back to a clear bulb. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks!

I decided that I wanted red lights for my gauges so I went to a import performance shop and picked up some little red light COVERS. I took off the plastic gauge cover and most of them just slipped right on, but the ones behind the speedometer I used a set of needle-nosed pliers to get them on. Turned out very nice.

I've done all this before. I tried the yank on it method...come on guys...I contorted myself so my head was under the dash and I removed the panel that covers the underside of the steering column...3 bolts i think? I could then easily see the cable, and I used a screwdriver to open the clip...it wwas easy.
I also changed to blue xenon bulbs...which I obviously changed from the back of the cluster. I've had 'em for almost a year and haven't lost one!!! Knock on wood. I left the turn signals alone though cus it was just too bright. I have since gone to white faces, but even with the black ones, it looked fantastic!!! I would never go back!!

Yes, they are absolutely bright enough. They are blue XENON bulbs though...I don't know if a regular blue bulb would be bright enough.

I gottem at ...uh,...well, it's a ***** speed shop here in greensboro NC, but I'm sure you can find'em around town if you look. They were from Eurolite...I'm sure you've seen eurolite stickers on ricers. They were 5 bucks a pair...but like I said...none have burned out...I also changed the bulb in my console under the PRNDD21 . It really makes a difference!!!!!!
