decent price for the 140 mph speedo?

A local yard has two of them for 65 a piece...is that about average, and does anybody else need one? Only bad thing is, both of them have over 200K big miles on them. Anyone know what amount of juice, and where to apply it so this baby can spin for a month? I'll get a 12 volt converter from radio shack if I can have my mere 130K back too!

I've bought and sold many 145s, and I've found that prices range widely--tell the yard man you'll take both of a $100 and I'd be surprised if he didn't go for the deal. You don't say what year the speedo are, but 86-89 are mechanical, not electronic. That said, you can remove the roll and manipulate mileage (which I did because I wanted the speedo to show correct mileage).

I've looked at alot on ebay, they start around 65, but trust me they always get way over 100 for them on ebay. But 65 is the starting rate generally.

Thanks for your help. I know I had to pull mine out a while back (long story) and it didn't have any cables, just a plug in, and my car is an 89....so the info about years for mechanical and electronic must be a little off. I do like the idea of reversing the polarity, but I still don't know what kind of current, and where to apply it. anymore help? I'll be glad to help somebody else out. I'll drop the $100 on him and see what he does...not many scrap yard guys can turn down 5 20's on the table

Can anyone tell me what would cause a speedo to stop working? I have an 87 Formula with the 145 speedo, but it doesn't work. I just purchased the car, so I have no clue how long it has been like this and what could have caused it. ANy ideas?

I paid $70 for my first cluster, I found one just this weekend for $60. Didn't get it though. In short thats ballpark.

For Firebirds:
As for adjusting the miles to be the same as yours, you can take apart the assembly & replace the odometer from yours into the 140 one, the mechanical pieces are the same. You will have to keep all the other pieces though like motors, circutboard from the 140.

sounds like a broken wire somewhere in the system. start with the Transmission & make sure all things are plugged in then start checking for broken wires.

On any of the odometers you can take them apart and set the numbers to whatever mileage you want, it just takes a bit of patience. On an electrical housing you can power the motor to roll the odometer backwards but it would take forever, assuming it'd even make it back to zero before it burned out.

Since some people are talking about Firebirds, and some are talking about Camaros, its important to remember that until 90 the Camaro speedo was mechanical, but the Firebird went electrical in 86.

For an 87 Firebird with a dead speedo there are a couple things to check. The speedo runs off a simple circuit board in the guage cluster. Its fairly easy to remove and inspect for burned traces. Its probably not a loose wire connection unless you've recently had them apart. Check the VSS in the tailshaft of the transmission. If you can check a wiring diagram for your car, trace the VSS circuit and check everything along the line and you should find where the problem is.

I went thru all of the above a few monthes ago and it turned out to be the VSS.
