Help, it may be totaled!

I got hit on the passenger side, my door is ruined, it won't even open, the front fender has damage, the support running up to the roof is damaged a little, and there is some damage to the rear qp. Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting totalled? Would putting a new door and fender on it help? How much would this kind of repair cost? I have less that 1000 miles on a new engine and transmission, so I don't want to lose her! Help me!! I cant live without my baby!

Your best bet to keep it from getting totaled is to show the insurance rep all the reciepts for your car's motor and trans and various other parts.

I overlooked the part about your roof support being bent. Is your windshield cracked/shattered? If she's hurt that bad you may need to have a body shop straighten it out before you would even be able to bolt a new door and fender on.

with a hit like that I would give up, let them total it and buy it back, this way you can buy a new car and take the engine

It depends, if your state has a law that says if you buy back your car it automatically gets a salvage title, (no big deal to you, but selling it with a salvage title may hurt the value) you may not want to go that way.

The other thing you can do is accept a check for an amount lower than 75% of it retail value, and the car won't be totalled.

If the car retails for 3K, and they offer you a check for $2000, take the cash and fix it.

It sounds to me like an easy fix, maybe a quick pull on the cowl and bolt on a nice used door, a little cheese here and there, and paint the side. Hard to really say without seeing it though.

when I was buying my t/a a friend I have that works in a body shop told me don't buy a f-body with any real damage. he told me f-bodies can keep you safe in a wreck but the car will never be the same, and will never hold its alignment again. If you can make a deal with the insurance to total it and buy it as a parts car, then rip out your engine and any other parts you want and find a nice non-wrecked f-body to stick it in, what worries me about your car is the jamed door and the bent windshied pillar.

Sorry to say but any car really except for a like a bmw, vette, etc that old would total out. That is a problem w/driving a third generation. love them but if u get hit ur car is done. Being that u said ur door is done and the fender is dented along w/the post on the car says u prolly got some frame damage. Best thing to do is cut ur loses pull the motor and tranny and drop it into one w/no motor or tranny. As for saying f-body's don't hold an aligment after being hit, that's bull b/c all it needs is to be is put back together right. I had one that was totaled bought it it back and fixed it never had a problem. The nose was in the middle of the engine compartment and put 364,00 miles on it w/never rebuilding a thing.

i dunno, it got hit pretty high. The minivan hit about half way up on the door. she was on the brakes hard, and was probably going no more than 10 or 15 miles per hour. the windshield did break, and my dad is telling me he won't let me use any of his garage or his cherry picker to get the engine out. it also has 600 bucks of fresh yokohama rubber, and so on. thanks for the advice.

Why not? That doesn't seem right to me. I think it's tiem to start looking for a new thirdgen from what you described.

Transmission: auto
When my 89 Formula(350 tpi) was rearended--I was told by a friend in a shop that it wasn't worth fixing--the year before I had put a trans in and a few months before I redid the whole top end of the motor--so I bought an 86 T/A w/a good body for cheap! Car's motor had a knock(tpi)and crappy interior--I completely gutted both cars and started my long transformation! I swapped everything!! Dash, dash harness, complete body and engine harnesses--everything! Had to do that because the 86 had the 3rd inj. setup and the 89 didn't-89 setup ran like crap w/the 86 harness- So what I'm saying is if you get another body for your setup make sure you get something compatible w/what you want to do--unless you're ready to do EVERYTHING!
Good luck w/your car!!-- BEEN THERE-DONE THAT!

Now, now take it easy. You both have points but let's not start an argument and help someone here. Personally, if I got hit I woulden't mind being totaled. My car has some body damage, new engine, & trans. If I got hit I would buy my car back, take the engine/tranny and drop it in a new thirdgen with a blown engine.

A friend ('91 305 TPI 'bird) of mine got hit in the front quarter panel (not very much damage) it was consitered totaled. He bought it back for $100. The insurance gave hime $4000 for his car and then he sold it for $2500 and bought a '94 Z and threw some go fast goodies on it.

I love how people here ask for parts from your car when it gets the slightest bit of damage to it.
