making a new console lid

hey guys,
so I'm looking at my old cracked console lid today and I'm thinking, why can't I just make a new one. what if I get a block of wood and shape it to something similar to the one I've got and wrap it in vinyl and padding. I don't see any special latches or anything that would suggest this not work, what do you guys think.

I think it is a good idea, I've been thinking of doing it so I could add cupholders and maybe some red neons to my car. Only problems is getting the vinyl around the curves without wrinkling it.

Don't know about neko's, but mines plastic core is broken into 3 or 4 pieces, the vinyl and foam are holding it together.

my plastic is cracked in pieces to, plus if I replace it with a new one it will just crack again, but the wood would be much stronger. I've wrapped vinyl before around another consone, it was a plastic one in a mazda, no problems and you could ony tell when it was open.

It sounds like a winner, the hinges will actually stay on too. I would love to see how it comes out!

Not to be a wet blanket, but looking in my Classic Industries catalog, a new console lid is only $55.75.

I know how you feel. I was in the same situation, and I didnt want a new one, too much $$. I think making one is a great idea, let us know how it works out! Unless you are restoring your car or making it a show car, I dont think its necessary to spend 55 bucks on one, just my opinion. Oh BTW, I got mine from the classifieds. Good Luck!
