Metal dragging sound

Car is making a loud sound as if metal is dragging the road only when accelerating up to about 20mph. It's so loud that driving behind the car the sound can be heard. I've looked up videos of people having similar issues and none sound similar. There doesn't seem to be any driving complications, so I'm hoping it's not something major?

Re: Metal dragging sound

Have you got under the car and looked?

No one is going to be able to tell you what’s wrong with that info

Have you inspected the underside of the vehicle?

I wouldn't be posting if I hadn't. There's nothing visibly loose.

I'd suspect a broken engine and/or transmission mount as a first guess.

Re: Metal dragging sound

Put the rear of the car on jackstands and accelerate. See if the noise occurs and try to pinpoint it.

Re: Metal dragging sound

Check the parking brake adjuster to make sure it is not hanging and rubbing on the driveshaft or maybe the parking brake cables on the driveshaft

Re: Metal dragging sound

buy a cheap bluetooth mic and zip tie it to parts of the car recording with your cell phone until you find where its loudest. Our buy a mechanics ear that comes with several mics.

Things to look at:
Wheel bearings on the front.
brake pads (especially the squeal tabs)
transmission mount (tail housing)
U joints play/bent tourq arm rubbing drive shaft.
rear diff/axle

what year car, if mechanical speedo check that cable

^^^^^^THIS^^^^^ I had a sound like this for the longest time, and it was the parking brake adjuster rubbing on the driveshaft. The cables came out of the groove they were supposed to ride in. I'd bet money that's where your problem is. Try yanking the ebrake a few times and see if the sound changes or gets worse/better while you're driving.

Re: Metal dragging sound

I would jack it up and have someone heavy sit in the hatch area to simulate the car squatting during acceleration. Next thought would be has your muffler came apart internally. Spin the tires on some grass and see if it happens.

Re: Metal dragging sound

Could be the inside piece of the muffler moving around.
