Does anyone know if my 1992 Firebird formula with power bulge hood has a insert in the bulge area? Is. there supposed to be some mesh or Finns there? Also I have the hardest time getting the hood open. It won't unlatch. Is that my hood shocks or Spring?
Should be blocked off in that year I believe, the 82-84 HO cars actually had a functioning formula hood to pull in cold air etc. but no other years have that from factory. Saw a guy on YouTube actually add that system to his 91 or 92 Formula to make it functional, claimed a nice gain and it bolted right in.
For the hood not opening correctly does the hood stay open on its own or do you have to hold it up when it does open? If it stays up then the hood struts are good. Could also be your hood latch is gummed up ( mine was filthy and stuck occasionally) or the cable needs adjusted or latch wore out. Not a bad idea to have a buddy pull on the release while you watch the latch and see what it does.

When they re-introduced this hood they had a sheet metal black blocking plate, I still have mine. I removed it years ago to allow the engine compartment to breath more. And yes, in the 82 to 84 bird with this hood there was mesh version, I had ordered one back in 89 for my car when I bought it. I cut into it and placed 3 auto-meter 2 1//8" gauges in it. Many thirdgen owners back then thought it was cool. Which if memory serves I got the idea from a Pontiac magazine which I subscribed to. I would read it cover to cover several times.
I would love to get another mesh one and I may end up making one some day. As for additional gauges, I have a 3 pod housing for the internal drivers side post this time.
Replace the spring as well as the shocks and clean the release lock. I did that and mine works like new.

Mine is blocked off but its not painted and it looks like it should have something there. As for the hood the shocks hold the hood up. I had a shop clean and grease the latch when they did some work on the car. Still it only opens when it wants to! LOL! I am going to look into the functional hood I would love that! Thank you 11
Firebird hoods are interchangeable from 82 to 92. Early Trans Ams have the asymmetrical cowl induction hood with a mesh screen in the opening. Later on the Formula was introduced with the same asymmetrical hood but the cowl is blocked off and non-functional.
I bought an early Trans Am hood from a junkyard in the desert out west. Underestimated the money it would take to paint match to my car. The hood still sits in my basement.
Now I see Hawks is going to have a carbon fiber hood. That seems more sensible to drop some money on than a stock hood when considering the potential weight reduction.

I was thinking of a carbon fiber hood as well. And you are correct the cost of paint is out of control!! People have no clue what it costs to paint a car. You are looking at minimum of 8-10K for a paint job and thats just a bare bones no frills paint job.

Buy mesh at a carpart shop or something like that. Put she solid insert on it, use scissors to cut the mesh in the same shape as the insert. Done. Easy.....
Have you tried pulling on different areas of the hood to get it to open? The hood on my '91 RS doesn't pop up when you pull the release like it's supposed to, and won't open if you try lifting it up from the driver's side, but always opens if you try lifting it from the passenger's side for some reason (after pulling on the release of course). I've tried lubing the latch and hinges, replacing the spring, and adjusting the spring, but nothing seems to help. Only thing I can figure is my release cable is stretched, and apparently they're a nightmare to replace.
